Texas commits on AP All-State teams

  • I think the TSWA lists that come out in early January are usually a little better but making the AP team is certainly a big honor. Here are the Longhorn pledges on the list. Also, the AP only takes into account the regular season so the stats on the link do not include the playoffs.

    Class 5A
    WR Jake Oliver-1st
    OL Kent Perkins-2nd
    LB Naashon Hughes-HM

    Class 4A
    QB Jerrod Heard-HM
    DL Derick Roberson-HM

    Class 3A
    OL Jake Raulerson-1st

    Class 2A
    QB Tyrone Swoopes-HM

Who cares? It's just "paper"... football isn't won on "paper."

Yet, Manziel's individual achievment is legit. It's not just "on paper" though...

Sort of...Honorable Mention. They list first- and second-teams and then Honorable Mentions.

  • Derick Roberson had 14 sacks in 11 games this season. Keep in mind, he only played 7 regular season games and the AP teams are voted on based upon what you do in the regular season.

    DAMN!!

We need that type of production coming in... Okafor was solid, and I expect Jeffcoat (if healthy) to be amongst the Big 12 leaders in sacks next year. However, I don't know who will apply the pressure post 2013.

    Shiro Davis?

Who would you like (assuming only one) to compliment Roberson? Garrett or Thomas? Or someone else in 2014?

I really expected Wilson to blow up after Jeffcoat went down this year. It turned out that Reed ended up moving in on the starting role.

Interested to see who will take over for Okafor next year along with Jeffcoat. I expect it to be Wilson, but I'm just not sure. This is his time to shine for sure...

Calling my shot early: Shiro and JJ are your starting DEs.

Could be - they both seem like they should be playing the same position though. Both WDE/Buck type of guys... who would be the Strong End?

chup, I know you rely on stats to tell the story instead of watching the games, but Davis played exclusively on the left side, while Jeffcoat plays on the right side.

OK - I am just questioning Davis' size and skillset at SDE. I think he's more of a BUCK style DE in our system.

Interestingly enough the official Texas depth chart has him listed as the 2nd team BUCK behind Reed as well. But, I'm sure that you are right. Nobody knows football like ole WildBill71... that guy has the vision of the program in the palm of his hands.

Of course, ole chumpita shows me a link. Assuming Okafor was the "strong side DE" this year, because he played on the left side, then Davis is also a "strong side DE", because he too played on the left side the majority of the time.

    WildBill71

  • Not that it really matters, as Texas doesn't move their DEs around based on offensive alignment anyway.

JJ. What you may lose in the way of stopping the run you'd more than make up for in the ability to rush the passer which is much more important in the pass happy Big 12.

Yea, I see what you're saying but we really got punched in the face at the point of attack this year. To be honest, I would rather line Dorsey up at SDE and have JJ and Shiro man the BUCK position. Stopping the run would take the pressure off of our DB's to focus on it and allow them to play stronger pass coverage.

Dorsey may be a Tackle (with Tackle size) but he is very athletic and fast. It would improve our run defense significantly IMO and that is something that really needs to happen.

Yet, Manziel's individual achievment is legit. It's not just "on paper" though...

You seem to be confused about the "on paper" comment, so I'll clarify.

You posted Ash's stats, which look good on paper. If you watched the games however, you'd know that Ash is limited as a QB and was useless against the two toughest defenses he played all year.

Manziel's award is not on paper. It was given to him by people that watched him play all year.

Manziel against the two toughest defenses he played this year (Florida and Alabama):
    47/61/77%/426 yards/2 TD/0 INT
    35 carries/152 yards/ 1 TD

Ash against the two toughest defenses he played this year (Oklahoma and TCU):
    23/50/46%/217 yards/0 TD/4 INT
    12 carries/18 yards/0 TD

Ash folded, Manziel rose to the occasion. Get over it. Your comment was silly at the time, and you being so butthurt about it still is even more silly.

Ah yes, the classic Manny Diaz... "dur, if I line up Santos AND Edmond at the same time, they'll never gain another yard!!! Those guys are BOTH MLBs, so no one should be able to run on us!!!"

He tried the same shit, lining Whaley up as the "weak side DE" (again, doesn't matter, might as well call them left and right DE), and that seemed to work out splendidly.

So, what you're saying is that Manziel was not "useless" when A&M played Florida and LSU? You think that 52-86 for 433 yards, 0 TD's, and 3 Interceptions is "all world"? Thanks for the clarification on that...

I guess we could look at games against shared opponents? Maybe?

Ash was 19 of 23 for 326 yards passing (82.6%) with 4 TD's... 259.1 QB rating against Ole Miss

Manziel was 17 of 26 for 191 yards passing (65.4%) with 1 TD, and 2 Interceptions... 124.4 QB rating...129 rushing yards at 6.5 yards per carry and a TD

I'd say that they matchup pretty well actually...

But, then again, anytime I'm talking with an Aggy I never know what I'm gonna get. I guess in your "little world" Aggy didn't end up 4th or 5th in the conference either?

Finally, yea - the heisman is different than All Conference, All American awards because it is "given" to him by people that watched him play? We are talking about an award that was "given" to the likes of Chris Weinke, Scott Frost, and Andre Ware... it must be due to the fact that these people that VOTED for this award "watched him play", but didn't watch the All Conference teams play? Is that basically what you are trying to tell me?

I am absolutely trying to tell you that the writers that voted for Mason Walters to be on an All conference list this year did not watch him play.

You ignore Manziel's game against Alabama, one of the three best defenses in the country. You also ignore Ash's games against KU, one of the worst defenses in the country. You ignore that Manziel got better as the season went along, and you ignore that Ash got worse as the season went along. You ignore that Manziel and his team beat the then #1 team in the country at their place, and you ignore that Ash has been benched three times this year.

You wanna stop the run then don't mad dog the LOS with your LBs. If the linebackers keep blitzing themselves out of the play it doesn't make a shit who you put at DE.

    And Dorsey? Really? C'Mon man.

No, I noticed Bama melt down and turn the ball over 3 times against your Aggys. I watched McCarron throw an interception on the Aggy 1 yard line with a little over a minute to go in the ballgame. "Johnny" sure made a great play on that interception didn't he?

I also see Ash's QB rating right about where "Johnny's" is... Ash was hurt against TCU and against KState and ended the season leading his team to 3rd in the conference. Not 4th or 5th... but yea, keep sucking off "Johnny"

I agree, scheme is bad from Manny, but you gotta agree that our Defensive Tackles and Ends played like they were on roller skates as well. Our Tackles couldn't separate from their blockers to save their lives. That meant that the offensive line could hold their blocks and force our LB's to make the tackle or rely on the secondary to do so. Especially early in the year, Manny was running our LB's out of the play with cute blitz packages... That seemed to decrease later in the year though.

Dorsey was very disruptive in the backfield and he seemed as fast as any end that we had on the team. I know we would lose a little bit on the pass rush, but most of these Big 12 QB's are getting the ball out of their hands fast anyway. Dorsey would be able to pressure the QB and absolutely stuff the running game. I don't think it's a reach. Dorsey is friggin fast.
