Texas announces 2012-13 non-conference hoops schedule

    Texas Basketball Announces 2012-13 Non-Conference Schedule
    Home slate features matchup against North Carolina on Dec. 19.

    AUSTIN, Texas — Matchups against perennial national powers North Carolina, Michigan State, UCLA and Georgetown highlight the 2012-13 University of Texas basketball non-conference schedule released today. The Longhorns also will make an appearance in the prestigious EA Sports Maui Invitational.

    The Big 12 Conference schedule has not been finalized at this date. UT’s complete television schedule for the 2012-13 season will be announced at a later date.

    The Longhorns open the 2012-13 season with a home date against Fresno State (Nov. 9), coached by former UT assistant Rodney Terry. Texas hosts Coppin State in the regional round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational (Nov. 12).

    The Longhorns then head to Maui for the championship rounds of the EA Sports Maui Invitational (Nov. 19-21). Texas will be joined in the eight-team tourney field by: Butler, Chaminade, Illinois, Marquette, Mississippi State, North Carolina and USC. Matchups for the championship rounds in Maui will be announced at a later date.

    UT returns to Austin for a pair of home contests against in-state opponents Sam Houston State (Nov. 27) and Texas-Arlington (Dec. 1). The Horns travel to New York City to play Georgetown (Dec. 4) at historic Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic. Tip time for the UT-Georgetown contest has already been set for 6 p.m. Central (7 p.m. Eastern), and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.

    Texas then faces UCLA at Reliant Stadium in Houston (Dec. 8) before returning to the Erwin Center for contests against Texas State (Dec. 15) and North Carolina (Dec. 19). Texas registered a 74-72 against No. 11 UNC on Dec. 30, 1995 in the Tar Heels’ only previous matchup against the Longhorns in Austin.

    The Longhorns will travel to East Lansing, Mich. to face Michigan State (Dec. 22) at the Breslin Center. Two years ago, UT snapped Michigan State’s 52-game home win streak against non-conference foes with a 67-55 victory (Dec. 22, 2010).

    Texas will conclude its non-conference slate with a home game against Rice (Dec. 29).

  • Really like this schedule a lot. A terrific preparation for Big 12 play, and very good for strength of schedule & RPI purposes.

    For Texas to be a high seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, they will need to go 10-3 IMO.

  • That is a very, very strong schedule thanks to the non-tournament games with Georgetown, UCLA, UNC, and MSU, but that has to be one of the weakest Maui fields in a long time. When you consider:

    1) UNC losing Barnes, Marshall, Zeller, and Henson,
    2) the implosion of Mississippi State;
    3) Illinois losing Leonard
    4) Marquette losing Odom and Crowder; and
    5) Butler's big post MacknHoward slide

    there isn't a really strong top ten caliber team in that field. UNC is the only team that gets placed at or near the top ten from people putting out their spring top 25s. Illnois and Marquette have a significant amount of talent, so it isn't like it's a field of patsies, but it's a far cry from having multiple final four contenders.

  • Great schedule. Love it. Also a sign that Barnes thinks this team can play to that level. Last year's very weak schedule got us into the NCAA tourney, so Barnes was right to go away from his normal tendencies last year. Lets hope his confidence is warranted this year.

    I thought the same thing Bierce. I can't remember a weaker one. Nice trip to go on though.

    Maybe. Fresno State has a pretty decent recruiting class when you consider the late addition of Robert Upshaw and Braeden Anderson (who failed to qualify for KU in 2011). It lost a couple of key guards, including its point guard and its leading scorer (who was also its one serious three point threat), but it returns 4 guys who combined for 110 minutes a game and two more who played about 14 minutes a game apiece, so they have a lot of experienced players.

    They aren't great by any means, but they should be improving on last year.

    Many coaches avoid playing their ex-assistants. Barnes didn't have any problem going for this deal... but I'm guessing it's a buy game.

    I was surprised they're not returning Temple... assumed that was a home-and-home. Maybe they'll go next year.

    They were pretty bad, but they actually came around a bit at year's end, despite the 4-8 finish leading up to the one and out in the WAC tourney. Those 8 losses included only one double digit loss (@ 13-1 Nevada) followed by losses by 1, 4, 4, 5, and three games that went to a combined 6 OT, with three of those losses being to either Nevada or WAC champ New Mexico State.

    So they weren't good, but they weren't nearly as bad as 3-11 in the WAC might suggest. I expect them to be on a par with a top Southland Conference team.
