Texas - Texas Tech Predictions

  • I got Texas winning it 31-21. Gilbert throws for 250 and 2 TD's and Fozzy gets 100 with Johnson getting the TD. The 4th comes on a pick six as Gideon gets redemption.

While you're thinking about your prediction enjoy this highlight from last year.

  • I hate to be Debbie Downer, but I see a loss. I'm very uncofident in the offense, especially the line and play calling right now. I see the defense keeping us in it, but wearing down, especially the interior line, in the 4th quarter. Tech almost always plays out of their minds at home against Texas and I feel Gilbert will struggle in the atmosphere and be hampered by a way too conservative play calling. I see a 23-17 type of Tech win. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I will gladly come back here and eat crow by the shovel full if I'm wrong.

  • I won't make a prediction. Instead, I just hope we win and get conference play started on the right foot. Just winning in Lubbock is a feat in itself so, I just want a win.

  • I'm good with the score but Foz getting 100 and Gideon with a pick 6 are pipe dreams man. We'll rotate backs so it is unlikely any one of them gets 100. Gideon is far more likely to knock someone out cold than he is to get redemption with a pick 6.

Or get knocked out cold himself, ala KU 2 years ago... I kid, I kid, dont want to start a Gideon fight here.

  • I am also anticipating a loss and I like the 24-16 prediction above.

I watched a significant portion of the Tech/SMU game and Tech did not impress me defensively, but this will be a completely different environment and Tech will be playing with far more intensity

Although I don't think the OL has been bad, I do think that it is average along with QB, RB and WR play. I like the potential of some of the younger guys on offense, but this is as average a unit as Mack has had and I expect them to get shut down in Lubbock.

GD will need to increase his security detail after we get through the next four games

  • I'm surprised at the predictions so far. Not because there is a lack of homerism, but because I think UT has looked pretty good so far and Tech, not so much. Sure there has been a lot of critique about the O here, but for the most part its picking fly shit out of the chili. The offense, for the most part has been efficient, just not totally dominating like we would all like to see. Personally, I think that is a matter of expectations. We expect UT to make Wyoming and Rice look like a high school team. That's just not going to happen when we are working on new things and treating the game like practice.

Tech, on the other hand, has not looked all that good. Their d is pretty weak. They struggled with a NM team that was down 50 something to nothing by half time the week before at Oregon. They have closed the line splits and are now far more susceptible to the outside speed rush . . . which happens to be a Longhorn specialty this year.

With all of that said, we really have very little information on which to base either team so far. Both have kept their playbooks closed past chapter 1.

If this was a neutral field I'd say 34 to 13 UT, but at Tech at night and the weird factor I'm going with 34-24 with Tech scoring the last seven late in the game to make it look closer than it really was.

  • This feels like a flat, high-penalty, some-what high-mistake game...one area that should not be overlooked...Mack has 130 wins @ Texas...when Texas out-rushes its opponent, Mack has 108 wins

& I'm not sure TTU has the OL needed to stop the Texas DL or Muschamp blitzing packages

  • Hate to say it, but this game is pretty much on the performance of Gilbert. He does well, Texas will walk out with a W.

I look for Mike Davis to start and that is an immediate help to Gilbert.

    Hornflat,

Think you summed it up well. Their D hasn't been impressive while our O has been solid. Our D has been impressive.

Unless we lose the turnover battle by a -2 or more, think we are good.

Pretty much how I feel. I think it will be a struggle and sloppy win with 24-13 sounding about right to me. I'll call 26-16. I think both teams have trouble actually getting in the end zone and kick a bunch of field goals.

Gilbert will be fine. I don't think the "environment" is going to be a factor for him. He may well have a turnover, but no biggie. I agree w/ the OP and think Fozzy has a bit of a breakout game (one can dream, right?) - maybe or maybe not 100 yds, but a big game.
Two of those scores I'll credit the defense - either a pick 6 or at least critical turnover that results in points. Tech will move the ball some, but stall in the red zone and end up kicking for most of their points.

  • People are wringing their hands about the offense but the defense has issues as well. I wasn't impressed with the defense against Wyoming at all. I'm thinking this will be a 3-7 point game either way. Too close to call IMHO.

  • You guys really haven't been paying atteniton if you think Fozzy is going to break out. It will be CJ that does a little better than the other two; thus earning the start for UCLA.

  • geez, I thought I was the only negative nellie around here.

I still think we'd win just because I still don't believe in Tech's defense. I know Tubberville is the new boss, but there's no way he could've implemented his changes yet. I also believe in our defense's ability to contain Tech's offense. The only wrinkle, and I would hope that our coaches are already preparing for is the possibility of Sheffield coming in for a change of pace, if not taking over the game.

    34-21 Texas, and I'm counting on 7points from D/ST

  • People are hand-wringing too much about the state of our team. Tech is tough in Lubbock on account of the crowd, but has only one win against us since '02. Against New Mexico, one of the worst teams out there, Tech averaged 6.0 yards per play and allowed 5.5. Against Wyoming (not Ohio State, but a saltier opponent than UNM), we averaged 5.9 and allowed 4.2. Sometimes we spend so much energy worrying about our little warts that we forget the other guy has pizza face.

Tech will probably move well on its first possession (a Muschamp tendency to allow) and break a few big plays. They are no juggernaut, though. We will have a few bonehead calls and plays, but will find ourselves ahead with the ball and a tired Tech defense in the fourth and will do what we do most of the time: win. Ugly still counts.

  • You can be positive about Texas and the direction of the program and still predict a loss. I am on the fence. This game could go either way. Right now, I'm thinking Tech's offense is a little further along than ours, and their pass rush is pretty tough against this offensive line.

We could win a 10 point game on the strength of our defense and a few big plays, but I think we lose a close one, say 17-13 because we can't yet sustain drives.

  • Tech scores: Gilbert pick 6, Special Teams score, 2 TD's and a field goal by Tech offense = 31
Texas scores: 3 TD's and a field goal by the offense = 24

For all the hype coming into the season, there are some issues in the Texas secondary as far as pass coverage is concerned, in particular Ch. Brown and Scott. Tech's ability to exploit the Texas' secondary coverage problems and a special teams mistake will be the difference in the game. I also think the Texas defense will be a little soft up the middle, allowing Tech to mount a respectable running game. Surprisingly, I think the biggest disappointment coming out of this game will be the play of the defense, not the offense.

Like usual, Tech plays out of its mind. GG feels early pressure and gets mentally worked over by multiple schemes defensively. We fall behind early and make a game of it in the second half.
