Ten thoughts on the NFL draft

  • * Of the first 12 picks in the draft, 11 came from Sunshine states, from South Carolina all the way to California. Only Luke Kuechly, at No. 9, didn't come from the area. If you want to know why the Big 10 gets a rap as a plodder's conference, it's because they pretty much are. There's just fewer big-time athletes.

    * Three Texas-bred QBs in the top 10, the most ever. The Horns did not offer any of them at their given positions. Three QBs, all misses. This is not the same as missing on Matt Stafford. This is just a case of very poor evaluation and thinking one player (Garrett Gilbert) is better than they really are.

    * Let's throw some more salt in the wound. 5 native Texans taken in the first round. None offered by Texas. Kendall Wright and Michael Brockers are as disappointing in their own ways as RGIII and Luck. Wright wasn't taken probably because he wasn't 6-3 and from the Dallas area where Bobby Kennedy recruited. Texas was too late in the game on Brockers. LSU knew about a young man from Houston before Texas did. That doesn't seem right.

    * Brandon Weedon's selection by the Browns spells something for Colt McCoy. Either McCoy will become a career back-up, stave off Weeden or he'll find a new home. But if he stays in Cleveland, someone will always be looking over his shoulder.

    * I don't know enough about the draft to say definitively who had the best draft. But I know that I really like what the New England Patriots did. Two big-time defensive players (DE and MLB) selected in the 20s. Any way you look at it, they just got better defensively. Give them a little defense and they probably win two more Super Bowls the last five years.

    * Morris Claiborne was a high school quarterback in Shreveport. Just more proof to me that only taking kids who are DBs in high school is not the way to find the best athletes long-term for corner and/or safety.

    * Breaking down the Texans in the first round:
    2 from Houston
    1 from Central Texas
    1 from East Texas
    1 from West Texas
    (DFW was shut out)

    * For Texan fans, I wish I knew more about Whitney Mercilus but pretty much all I've seen are highlights and a couple of regular season games. For what it's worth, during the games he didn't really strike me as a special player.

    * Aaron Williams is getting a baller to play alongside him in the Bills secondary in South Carolina's Stephen Gilmore. The Bills are quietly amassing some very good (and relatively) young talent on defense.

    * The Steelers pick of guard David DeCastro is one of the reasons why they are so good so consistently. They do a great job of getting extremely talented blue collar positional players in the middle of the first round. Think Casey Hampton.

  • Colt is done in Cleveland. You don't draft a 28 year old QB in the first round to have him sit.

  • Maybe McCoy can go to a team that has some receivers who can catch a pass and where he'll have a chance to compete for a starting job. I don't know if any QB could do well in that Cleveland offense in the state that it was in when Colt came in.

  • With respect to mercilus pick by Texans (at the very least texans win the award for drafting the player with best name in the draft) the guy is almost 6'4 260 and runs in 4.6s. Couple that with a nose for the football (9 FF) and 16 sacks in first full year of playing (also only a junior) and I think it was an excellent choice for the texans. We needed depth at OLB and pass rush. He Could be better against the run.

    Also his interview was awesome: "I never ever ever give up getting after the QB." The last player the texans drafted from the Midwest who had a similar work ethic and athletic ability was one of the best DL in the league as a rookie. Given that it's hard to get good pass rushers outside of the first round and that the class of WR and OL, where texans also need help, is a pretty deep this year, I thought it was the right move

    True. I heard John Clayton on Sportscenter a little bit ago and he said they are looking at trading Colt, but with so many free agent veteran QB's already having found new teams and signed that it could be difficult to move him and get any trade value. Said he could end up staying in Cleveland.

  • every pick is a boom or bust pick. the hit rate on players in the first round is terrible.

    texans historically pick well on DL in first round (minus amobi okoye - first rick smith draft; and travis johnson - different GM)

    2 of last 3 defensive players have been pro bowlers (watt and cushing with jackson improving last year although still a reach pick in the first)

    This comment struck me as odd.

    Now maybe there is a larger data set out there but off the top of my head, I'm trying to recall top flight DBs HS positions.

    On our own team we have a mixed bag, MT is struggling mightily at S while Duke Thomas is adapting like a fish takes to water.

    Dak was a HS QB I think but most top flight DBs have been DBs from the jump.

    Honey Badger strikes me as the exception not the rule.

    Onto the Colt situation, a crappy organization and I hope Colt gets traded somewhere he gets a real shot.

    Derrick Strait was a QB at Lanier in Austin and played DB for OU very well. A lot of schools put their best athlete at QB.

    Rumored that the Browns are shopping McCoy. The Packers are looking to replace Matt Flynn behind ARod.

    Yes they are. Every "expert", including NFL scouts, has rated and drafted players who were presumed to be a "sure" thing, only to have such player flop on their face. Granted some guys have less bust potential than others (Luck v. Jamarcus), but that doesn't discredit the principle that the NFL draft is a microcosm of educated guessing, and guessing inherently entails that each choice is a boom or bust.

    That doesn't make any sense. Boom or bust means this guy is a star or he's out of the league in 3-5 years. That scenario doesn't cover every draft pick. Plenty of league vets that are simply good players. So no, it isn't boom or bust for every player.

  • Everyone wanted to trade down despite the fact that the rookie wage scale means taking a player high in the draft does not carry the same risk it once did.

    It was a buyers market for trading up. Unless you are the Redskins and will go down in the record books as overpaying the most for a draft move relative to fair market value in the history of the NFL.

  • I think the browns and the cowboys could help each other, both mike jinkens and colt are on the trading block , cleavland needs a corner, and Dallas needs a young QB to groom, both should come relatively cheap, plus I think Tony could be s good mentor for colt,

  • Michael Griffin was primarily a high school RB. Quandre Diggs played very little defense. Adrian Phillips was a high school QB.
