TeXas as Independant for the next 4 yrs

  • If we cant get the conferenc we want.....lets play as an independent for 2-4 yrs.

    This will allow us to see how things shake out conference wise
    Allow us to see how this LHN network works out

    As an independant ....i would love a schedule that includes

    OU
    A&M
    LSU
    NOTRE DAME
    BYU
    BOSTON COLLEGE or PENN STATE
    Arkansas
    Stanford

    Baylor
    Rice
    Tulane
    Houston
    Lamar

    Of course we cant play all those major teams above
    Airforce
    Arkansas

  • It's a big assumption that we can get a schedule like that. Most of those teams, like us, are booked years in advance. Also, some of them might not want to play a team as strong as Texas out of conference. Independence is no easy road. If 16 team conferences become a reality this year, there are going to be even fewer out of conference game slots available. Some teams may want to fill those slots with cupcakes.

    I'm sure we can fill out a reasonable schedule, but it's not going to be as sexy as that.

  • As an independent we wouldn't be able to schedule those games because those schools will not want to uproot their schedules to incorporate an unplanned game against a non-conference opponent that could cost them their chance at a BCS bowl. The guaranteed BCS bid that you get for winning your conference will keep a lot teams focused on that and not on playing Texas. Plus when I hear about adding USC or other schools its always 8 or 9 years into the future. Scheduling is complicated.

  • Ideally i think we gotta think recruits... And drive home the points of playing 6 games inside of texas and playing another 4 within driving distance.

    And we gotta keep our rilvaries and create ones that would easy

    LSU AND Arkansas. Would be my choice ...

    We need to play every year in 1-2 times houston and 1-2 times in dallas

    Play arkansas in dallas. .....and. LSU IN HOUSTON

    Keep it simple ....play most of your games in texas....and the rest, to places any recruit would love to play.

  • One of the biggest issues with going to an independent route is the secondary sports. They are very important tho the athletic department and the school. There would need to be a conference alignment with those sports. Scheduling for football would be tough as well. Doable but not ideal IMHO.

    You wouldnt happen to be based in La. or SE Texas would you? Rice, Houston, Lamar, LSU and Tulane, but no TCU or Tech?

    With the Longhorn Network established, Texas can survive no matter where it winds up over the next few years, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it stay put in the "Big whatever is left of the 12 and any addons" for purposes related to buyouts, avoiding withdrawal fees and litigation, etc. If Texas remains in the carcass of the conference through the current 5 year plan and gives notice according to the by-laws, it will avoid any penalty to the conference. If the Fox deal collapses in the meantime, well. . . ESPN paid $300 million over 15 years for one football game a year. What would it pay for 8, 9, or 10?

    As a long term solution, independence in football could work, if well planned years in advance. Talk to Notre Dame, BYU, OU, A&M, about having games scheduled on a long term basis. That would give a strong 4 game core to the annual schedule. Get a couple of games a year with other strong schools in major conferences. Add some in-state opponents (Tech, TCU). Toss in a couple of teams that won't require a reciprocal visit. Finish with some schools that will accept 2 for 1 deals. Bonus points for teams that want their home game on the Longhorn Network.

    Conference affiliation for other sports.

  • It's not that long ago that Arkansas pussed out of a game with us. I don't think they want to play us yearly. LSU would be neat, but they won't want to play us yearly either. They'll want easy OOC games to minimize the impact of the SEC schedule.

    That would get us like 2 times yr playing in dallas

    Keep the money in texas....and allows parents to see those games

    I know the odds of this happening is nil, but we need to focus on playing in texas or within driving distance.

    LSU WOULDNT FLINCH at the opportunity to play Texas each and every year in Reliant stadium.......

    Give me these rivalry games every year....and we would rival the intensity of any sec schedule

Playing a juggernaut like Texas OOC puts them at a disadvantage to other teams with similar aspirations. I highly doubt a yearly Texas game would be something they would even entertain. I would love to be wrong on that though. It would be hella fun.

    Arkansas doesn't want to play us either. It was just a couple years ago that they bailed on a game with us. They're focused on competing in the SEC. Adding a team like Texas to their schedule every year is something they're not going to be interested in. They want cupcakes, not big potential losses OOC. The SEC is a grind, that's their focus.

    Exactly.... I am cajun .... And south east tx is quite possibly the mother of all mother loads of best recruitsvin nation. ( houston to conroe east to gilmer , south to orange.....)

    I say focus on the markets that bring in the money and recruits......

    Dallas and houston

    TT , OSU can twist in the wind if they mutinee on us... They need that texas game more than we need them.

    Yes and no. LSU has been very good about scheduling a team with top ten aspirations for an early nonconference game recently.

    2010 UNC and WV
    2007 Va Tech

    If they had the annual game with Texas, they wouldn't need to go looking for another opponent.

    Would this be home and home or neutral site? I doubt UT would want to have a second neutral site game every year. Of course, with huge LHN $ coming in and an independent schedule permitting for lots of home games, maybe it would. LSU already has a sufficient presence in Houston, and with what will surely be annual games against A&M, it will increase their presence in East Texas, but I can't imagine the schools playing it as a neutral site game anywhere but Houston.

    I agree, if only to slow things down a bit. Moving to the Pac-16 may be inevitable, but frankly, it makes me uncomfortable that this thing is moving so fast. We seem to be moving on OU's timetable, and that's a bit unsettling. If we go independent, we still have options if that doesn't work out. If we move to the Pac-16, there's no turning back. Let OU and OSU head west first and be the test dummies for a few years and then decide if it's something that would be good for us.

    Good point. We'll have case studies for moving from the Big 12 to the SEC/B1G/Pac-14 and can then go about making an informed decision about which situation is best for us instead of what seems to be a completely reactive one.

    I'll repeat that it would make more sense to hang onto the shreds of the Big 12 than go independent for the duration of the current 5 year agreement.

    Who would UT schedule to fill out the schedule over the next 4 years if it leaves the Big 12 without joining a different conference? That's 8 games to fill. Former Big 12 teams that have joined a new conference already have most NC opponents and dates lined up for the next four years. Most teams have a spot open somewhere for another game, but cramming Texas into a schedule during conference season will be extrememly difficult.

    Ergo, the most likely candidates to fill the schedule are the Big 12 schools that don't have anywhere to go. As an independent, Texas is more likely than not to wind up playing MU, KU, Baylor, ISU, and KSU in the 2012-2015 seasons and having to make additional financial considerations, since they'll all be in pissy moods and know Texas will have a hard time filling out the October/November part of the schedule.

    How much financial backlash would result from Texas walking away from the Big 12? There is still that little matter of a $1.2 billion contract. Does anyone think the remaining Big 12 schools are going to let that disappear without some kind of fight?

    I really think Texas is going to stick around with the Big 12 or what's left of it for the next few years, get extra games for the Longhorn Network, get more money from ESPN for the extra games for the Longhorn Network, keep as much as it can from the Fox TV contract with the Big 12, and leave the conference with two years' notice before the end of the current 5 year cycle. That gives Texas 4 years to figure out the plan. No rush. No risk. Lots and lots of money coming in. Lots of time to figure out the best thing to do.

    If there is a mutually agreed upon plan for Big 12 dissolution with nobody objecting and a conference that is willing to accept the Longhorn Network, that will change the analysis. Until those things happen, Texas has an annual excess of $35 million reasons to be patient.

    I agree with you about the sig pic girl, but I really do think that there are conferences that would rather Texas stay out.

    I was all about having TLN, but it has turned into a shit-fest. I have Time Warner and am willing to pay extra, but I (like many others) have no access.

    This has demonized Texas, spiked OU and TAMU's fleshy/limp phallus with OOC(out of conference) Viagra, and the Longhorn nation was largely left out from watching their much anticipated season-opening game.

    UT should be fine, but OU and TAMU are posturing like they have grapefruit-sized testes and are looking to go Peter North all over UT's face.

    I, too, think that the best move is to stay in the rubble of the Big 12 and make a move after the crap settles. That being said... Who knows? By then it may be too late.
