    In wealth that is.

Stunned to read that only 20% of the University's operating budget comes from the state.

Yet people cry out over tuition increases. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Let me clarify.....I think I would rather be 3rd with an affordable (relative) tuition than 1st with a higher tuition. In fact, I would not have degrees from UT if the tuition rates weren't reasonable.

UT is at about 13% state support now.

  • Help me with Ut tuition verses A&M. Is our $9000 a semester and A&M $19000 a year?

I think the A&M number may be for the entire year. The Tribune has them at $8.5k a semester.

    Compare with:

    UMich: $12,634
    UVA: $12,224
    Cal: $13,200

It's a question of whether you want UT to stand with those schools. Shockingly, some people in this state would like that.

  • States are supporting universities less and less. That is why the tuition has gone up so much. It is also why the next bubble is student loan debt. And it is going to get ugly.

  • 8.5-9 a semester!! Wow you guys are getting so ripped off it's not even funny. American tuition rates are a joke. I pay 6K a year in tuition plus another thousand for books.

numbers on that are flat out ugly.

I committed to both my boys they would not use loans to go through college.

But that bubble is going to pop ugly.

the student loan bubble is attributable to the for-profit universities that exist on federally subsidized loan programs and churning out worthless pieces of paper they call "degrees".

Lulz at the downvote. Univerisities are getting away with robbery charging those prices. I can't believe you guys aren't more upset.

I work and I am a student at a UT campus and students are not getting robbed at those prices.

  • It appears they are attributing the entire UT System endowment to UT Austin, yet the endowment is distributed to all UT System institutions. Does anyone know the UT Austin portion of UTIMCO?

" The University of Texas system, with an endowment of more than $17 billion, is the richest public university in the U.S., and the third richest overall."

    zquippy

  • UT Austin is around 7.2 billion

as a total baby boomer, may i say you are absolutely correct. The title of that book, The Greatest Generation was clearly NOT written about us. I see the selfishness and greed in my generation and our politicians and it sickens me. This student loan thing is just amazing to me. I paid no attention to it at all until the recent controversy about the interest rates escalating. Once i started paying attention i was just floored by the burden that you younger people face now getting an education.

what happened to parents. My parent paid my way through law school. Ok, i worked some. I worked nights at St. Davids Hospital, i played trumpet gigs when i could get them. But the bulk of what i did was paid by my parents. They did the same for my brother who has a phd in Chemical engineering (at least one smart guy in the family). And my parents were the middle of middle class. No wealth there at all.

i paid for my sons education at Loyola in New Orleans. (and apparently some drinking and partying as well but hey, i should have paid better attention- plus its NOLA)

leaving students now to handle these loans in amounts that are equal to a mortgage on a home when they get out and just start working is not an acceptable way of handling education costs n a country that wants to be the cutting edge leader in technology and commerce.

so yes, shame on me for not paying attention and shame on my generation for allowing this.

and Mods, my apologies for this rant. I shall now return to football, i promise

  • The bloated cost is disgusting, and it's making it where the cost of school isn't worth it unless you are specifically going for a medical degree and can stomach being a physician. There's just no reason to go to business school anymore, you can take that 72 to 100k you'd spend on tuition and start your own business.... Fail, learn from your mistakes and become more savvy, then build a successful business. Seriously, it's ridiculous that anyone would sign on to pay that kind of money when there's no way they'll be able to pay it back and still support themselves post graduation.
