In the northeast corner of the grandstands and along the top rows of the upper decks, seats were left empty by thousands of fans who apparently found a better holiday tradition. Whether they missed their old rivals or whether they couldn't build up any excitement for a new one, or whether they simply weren't very good to begin with, the Longhorns' revamped turkey day celebration was a disaster. With the defense reverting to its poor-tackling midseason form, and with starting quarterback David Ash benched twice in one game for ineffectiveness and turnovers, the Longhorns (8-3, 5-3 in the Big 12) forfeited any hope they had of winning a Big 12 title or advancing to a Bowl Championship Series game. Both of those goals were in reach before Thursday's game, but evaporated when backup quarterback Case McCoy threw into triple coverage and had his pass intercepted by TCU's Sam Carter on the Longhorns' final drive. The Longhorns then forced a three-and-out, setting up a final chance for McCoy, who had led UT to a comeback at Texas AM last Thanksgiving and another last month at Kansas.
