Texas football coach Mack Brown has named Patrick Suddes, a former Alabama aide, to its newly created director of player personnel position.

  • Bobby - do you expect Mack to bring others from outside of the state, or start filling the staff with in-state connections? Meaning, do you see somebody from AZ or Cali on the staff that may have connections out west?

& then possibly someone to cover each of HOU, DFW, West Texas, etc?

  • Thanks, TOS. Uh, I mean Bobby.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

  • Bobby, is it possible that we could see former Longhorn football players (VY, Vasher, Babers) in this department?

  • Not a splash hire IMO. He just got passed up by Saban to hire someone else. He has been doing mostly operations stuff during his time at Bama. I want someone who can push mack aside and target the right prospects and be in charge of evaluation and and developement. I dont think running camps and coaches clinics is what is holding texas back.

I think so. May not be the same names you are thinking, however.

There's no "splash hire" in the world that will "push" the head coach aside at any school

  • probably could have said it better, but someone with a better track record for what texas has been missing the last few years. Also, someone that wont just fall in line with the culture that mack has created.

  • Bobby: This seems to address one of the primary improvements (evaluation at all levels of the program from identifying prospects to player development after joining the team) that you were calling for in your excellent article concerning the actions needed to secure the future success of the program published several weeks ago.

Two questions: 1) Is Suddes tasked with what you feel the program needs or can you tell yet? 2) What has been his role at Alabama as assistant in the area of player and recruit development?

It's a new world to some of us ! ;=)

And another example of Mack being years behind what Saban is doing at Bama.

    1. Yes, most definitely. This is the type of guy they needed. They didn't need a high school coach looking to move up the ladder. They needed someone to get a system in place.

    2. He has been primarily an ops guy at Alabama running camps and clinics. But he has overseen various recruiting aspects.

The key here is that this is the first hire and subsequently specific issues will be addressed that include 1) attracting recruits and communicating recruits and 2) evaluating recruits earlier and more thoroughly.
