  • Briles would be a good coach at Texas but I don't think the exes would ever warm up to him. I know I wouldn't.

Fair point and I know when Fitzgerald is discussed Jerry (I think) has wondered if he could close with big time recruits................other than Harbaugh I really don't see anybody that is a slam dunk..............Texas never would hire Diaz without several years of HC experience. In addition before we induct Coach Diaz into the College Football HOF we need to remember.........before last season many experts thought Diaz are the most risky hire for Coach Brown.

I see what you're saying but he's the politician that Mack is, but a whole lot better in the X's and O's, his philosophy is absolutely ingenious and it'll work until the NCAA is as good as the NFL (so always)

  • No more talk of Saban??? I like Diaz as a coach and recruiter but he doesn't seem like the PR type of coach that Mack is.

You serious Clark? Diaz's greatest strength is arguably his stage presence and speaking skills. That's one of the reasons the boosters have supposedly fallen in love with him. Dude is a quote machine and very personable.

Hmm guess I haven't seen enough of him on the podium

He had one of the better qbs in recent years in a weak pac 10 with usc suspended and still couldnt get there. Hes a good coach no doubt, but not 8 mil a year good

I think he'd work wonders at Texas. Luck didn't coach himself, and Alex Smith improved greatly this year from what he was before. Guy is great at winning. I'd give him the keys without hesitation.

  • I love the idea of major... I don't know if it will happen though

  • Harbaugh would be worth every penny of $8 mill. Realistically speaking though, Manny would at the top of my list.

  • it will be a few years before it happens, maybe five. All of the Briles supporters keep forgetting he is only about 5 years younger than Mack. Briles is a good coach, but I don't think he is top shelf. His story will be told in the next 2-3 years wo RG3. Rhodes is good, but not the PR guy Texas has to have. Sark, Manny, Major are all good guesses. Give Harsin a few years and let his offense have some good years and his personality come out. Bottom line is, there will be a ton of great candidates.

Saban is obviously a strong candidate, but if we're going to get rid of Mack because of age, it would be odd to hire a replacement that's the same age.

  • We're all in love with Manny right now, and for good reasons. My only hesitation is that he's still a relatively young coach to be taking over a program like Texas. Further, unlike Harsin and Applewhite, Diaz walked in with a pretty full cupboard, and we all know talent tends to make good coaches. Remember who won the Broyles Award in 2005? Not that I ever want to find out what he can do with lesser talent, but I wouldn't mind seeing him with more seasoning before considering him for the head position.

I would be shocked to see Saban get the Texas job. There is too much dirt on that guy.

Mack likes Saban, which could be an indication that there may be more envy than substance behind all the rumors. With 3 national championships in the past 8 years, if Mack were to recommend Saban he would move to the top of UT's list in a heartbeat.

  • Sark is intriguing. I want to see him do more at UW though, and I think he's on his way.

I think the next UT football coach is going to have a to be very media savvy if the LHN is still around. Coaches shows, interviews, and all sorts of engagements are going to be featured. He will be the face of the program more than before so I think a dynamic, engaging and charismatic personality is going to be needed to take full advantage of the exposure we are going to get.

We're also going to need a guy who can hob nob with the big boosters as well as relate to high school parents in small town settings.

That's Manny Diaz. Ideally, I would like to see him here 2-3 more years and keep developing relationships with HS coaches and take over for Mack with Applewhite as OC (I assume Harsin will land a gig).

One thing Diaz has against him though is his network of coaching colleagues is very limited compared to other's out there. One thing I was impressed with was Muschamp's ability to bring in guys with NFL and college coaching experience back from his days at LSU and the Dolphins.

So maybe a guy like Peterson, Mullen or Sarkisian can offer more in that regard.

In the end, the next head coach will be pretty much personally picked by Mack.

  • Harbaugh would have been my #1 till he jumped to the show, he's not coming back for awhile.

Manny Diaz doesn't have many skins but neither did DKR when he showed up, we would be wise (since we are gambling with anyone) if he was the leader

Chris Peterson certainly gets an interview but remember, both Kotieng (sp) and Hawkins didn't do so well with the jump to light speed. Again, my point about a gamble

Fitzgerald is a great coach but I'm really glad we didn't go with Gary Barnett

Paul Rhoades, Dan Mullen, Steve Sark. . . all very good coaches

Is Major even 35 yet? Not sure short term, I like making my RBs coach a head coach. 10-15 years from now, another story. Basically if it's Diaz v Major in the next 2-4 years, Diaz.

Granted I don't have the "feel" of assist coaches that Gerry Jeff would have so there might be another "Diaz" type out there to add to the list but Diaz is a devil we know.

OTOH, with Harbaugh in the NFL, I don't see a "can't miss" college coach but whomever comes is filling big shoes. This is assuming guys like Saban or Stoops aren't moving.

PS, no mention of Gary Patterson? Like him much better than Briles.

About time you mentioned Patterson.. Couldn't believe it took so long in this thread.. Cmon guys!

Anyone else think that Deloss and Mack are keeping an eye on Muschamp's success at Florida? It could give them insight as to whether or not a first time head coach like Diaz would survive after taking over for a well established and successful head coach.

    Urban Meyer on anyone's list?

  • No to UM, sorry, seems a tad unstable but very successful coach.

Problem with Muschamp is the same with Mark Richt, if they are having success they aren't coming here. If they are on the market, we have to ask why we want them. Though I could see a senerio on both.
