Statement from Myck Kabongo

  • Myck Kabongo will make his season debut Wednesday night against Iowa State. The University released this statement from the sophomore now that the suspension is finished:

    "I am ready to start playing with my team again and putting behind me the last several months. When I went to Cleveland last summer, I did not intend to break any rules and did not believe I had broken any. I should have been upfront with UT about everything the first time I had a chance, but I’m glad that I corrected my mistake and I’m glad that I was truthful with the NCAA.

    I have learned a lot about myself and what is important to me through this process. I have a great team, and they have supported me all year. I believe I am a better teammate and am looking forward to finishing the season with my team. I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for sticking by and supporting me all year.”

    I looked at three random draft sites. He was projected 36, 37, and 45 in those three. Of course, probably no player at this point is in a position to either help or hurt himself more than Myck, since no one has seen him play for almost a year.

    He was also listed as anywhere from the 7th to 10th best PG. At this point, those are mid-second round projections.

    Yeah. That has a chance to change based on how he looks over these final 8 games + Big 12 tourney.

    Everyone knows that's what he should do. But these guys want to get to the NBA as fast as possible. We saw him almost go last year for poor reasons too.

  • I must say, that I am a bit disappointed. When I first saw this thread head, I fully expected an announcement that Myck had come to his senses and had apologised for any way that he had embarrassed the UT basketball program, and that he was announcing that he was coming back next year! Lo! I awoke from my dream, and it was determined not to be so. Poot! My dream wuz better! ;)

    Yes. Simply read the release. Not a single word about coming back next year. "Just happy to finish this year" [to improve his draft position]. Well the last was my insertion; but hopefully you get the point. . He'll take a second pick and hope for a guaranteed program; otherwise he will decide whether he goine D-league or takes the money in Europe for a couple of years. He fully planned on being one and done when he came to Texas.That only changed after he went to his "work-out" and found out that he wasn't going to be drafted in the first round, hence the suspension. He'll take the money at this point.

    Yeah. It would be great for us fans to imagine that that was not the reality. Can't say that I would be any different if it were me in their shoes. I guess we have to remember that this is not our life.

    Good to have you back, Mr. Kabongo. I look forward to seeing you play and hope to see the team perform better for it. Twenty-three games can be considered a disproportionate response to your transgression, but your claim of purity of intent just doesn't ring true.

    OK, bierce! Dang it! I am calling you all those things! But that is just on general principles. +1 for you anyways, not that it matters, but it still will have to wait until after midnights! Cause, you know, I uses em up early in the morn. ;)

    Well, you did leave out the first seven words. "When I went to Cleveland last summer, I did not intend to break any rules and did not believe I had broken any."

    That part may have been true. By most accounts, it was the lack of truthfulness that caused most of his trouble.
