Statement from Jerry Gray

  • Aristotle said...

He cared so much that he sent a bulk text to break up with his university team.

How do you get that from what he said, as opposed to "multiple texts to each individual player?"

  • from what i understand, jerry was bohls' source so i see this as more damage control, not calling bohls out.

    I took his direct quote.

''I texted every one of the players when I made the decision and encouraged them to keep working hard and continue the great things they're doing to get ready for the season.''

This is best done as a bulk message for the sake of time and effort.

Anyone mad enough at Gray to want him "cut off" most likely has some deep-seated personal issues and an unrealistic view of the coaching world (hint: they are mercenaries).

I'm sad to see him go, but I wish him the best in the NFL.

    This. +1

Bohls is just an attention whore. Just like Randy Galloway. Paid to be the devil's advocate.

I never got the idea Bohls was getting his stuff from Gray directly...maybe he did...maybe he didnt. Either way it seems Gray didnt like the column Bohls put out yesterday, and wanted to respond to those claims about money. Bohls is a hack - the fact he put that stuff out and his other column right during junior day is just more proof the guy is agenda driven

  • HornInATX - I dont think it was "just the next opportunity". It was to the be the DC of an organization he is very close too, and to coach with a guy who he is very close with. If the Raiders offered him the same position, I think he would turn it down. It's a perfect storm almost.

  • i think people here are responding in part at least to bobby's assertion on an earlier thread that he believed bohls had very good sources on this one or something along those lines.

With those two additions, the "Kirk Bohls is a hack" club just reached 10 million and three members.

    Make that 10,000,004.

Bohls got exactly what he wanted - controversy and people talking about his column. He's not Bill Little - he's a freakin columnist. Writing exactly what we all want to hear will not sell newspapers. He knows exactly what he's doing.

  • I've read some of the less than complimentary posts in this thread. I feel differently. Jerry had a tough decision.

I always thought it was the DC position that swayed him and not the money. He just wants to run the defense and I can't blame him for that. At this point I'll just root for a fellow alum. I wish him the best.

So, is he closer to the Titans or Texas? I ask this because I think he burned his bridge at Texas in order to go to a lame duck organization. It's not like he was here for a few seasons (or even 1 season) and left for another opportunity. Coaches do that all the time. He left at a really bad time, and hurt his former school in the process. That is hard to forgive, particularly if it was not about the money. When was the last time a legacy came back to his school to coach and left a month later?

Total class act!!!! I can't believe folks would disown him for moving on. Things mentioned like "he shouldn't be allowed back to UT". That's just absurd. He is a true longhorn. A man who has not forgotten where he is from.

You wanna start a petition to get his number retired? Maybe just a statue?

  • Guys, a couple of things. This isn't directed at any individual, just an overall post to the board:

Bohls did have very good sources for this story. You can question him if you want to, but it would be an ill-informed opinion.

I have no problem if you want to disagree with what Kirk writes and want to take him to task for that on this board. You're more than entitled to your opinions, and we want to hear them. There have been plenty of times when I've disagreed with Kirk. Trust me, we've had our arguments.

However, the personal insults need to stop. Kirk is not only a co-worker of mine (and indirectly affiliated with this site), but he's one of my closest friends. To boot, he's an extremely good person. He wakes up at 3 a.m. every Tuesday morning to go feed the homeless. He mentors troubled students at local elementary schools. He's easily the hardest-working journalist (and worker for that matter) I've ever encountered. The world would be a much better place with more Kirk Bohlses.

Again, this isn't to say you can't critique his work or call his column idiotic. That comes with the job. No more personal insults.

You may now post how much I suck (that's fair game), or make sarcastic jokes about how it's sweet I came to the defense of my valentine, Kirk Bohls.

Its asinine to me all the people that are pissed at Jerry.

I guess I'm in the minority and wish him success and good luck.

He is a guy that legitimately cares about his alma mater as much as we all do, and because he accepted an unbelievable opportunity, he is crucified. I understand the disappointment but that's about it. Could he have made the decision quicker? Sure. But if he was truly struggling with what to do, maybe he needed some time. Its not like it hurt us anyway, with Akina coming back.

please tell me you don't really consider being the DC of a floundering NFL organization an "unbelievable opportunity"?

Is there anything at all that you won't tolerate from an ex player?

Now, can everyone drop the Jerry Gray/Kirk Bohls bashing? Its done. We've moved on.

You're making a really big assumption there, and judging him based on that assumption.

Come to think of it, even beyond the text message thing, everyone who's judging him harshly is jumping to a lot of conclusions based on facts they're pulling out of their asses.

You aren't in the judge's chair and you don't know the grisly details, so let it be.

Stating that texting every player to say the same thing was done in bulk rather than individually to save a tremendous amount of time and effort is not so much as an assumption, but a logical conclusion.

You can go back and read the Jerry Gray threads while this was taking place for some observations that go into great detail about honor, loyalty, class, honesty, and what employers do during the hiring process b/c they also have to protect themselves. These aren't assumptions but exercises in logic and drawing from experience of everyone who has worked for an organization or has gone through a job interview.

ohhh, breaking up by texting.. such is the new generation.. that is a painful way to go...

On the other hand, it is done, we have Akina (my Hawaiian dude) so can we just focus on the future... if Jerry ever pops again, we can save all this energy for then..

Well we have Gray directly disputing some of Kirks recent claims re money and having issue with what others were making. I dont know Bohls sources but either Bohls is right or Gray is lying in his statement. Maybe we will never know.

I know you are in a tough place in regard to how UT fans feel about Kirk - but to say he isnt really a popular guy in the fanbase would be an understatement. Maybe he's a good guy...dunno

Are you serious? He kicked us in the balls on the biggest recruiting weekend of the year. Notice how Mack didn't make a comment about him being welcome back in the future. Regardless of what we think, as far as the powers that be at UT are considered, his bridge has been napalmed.

Are you just as pissed at Akina?
