Statement from Jerry Gray

  • From the Texas SID office...

Statement from Jerry Gray on going to the Tennessee Titans:

"This was the hardest decision I've ever had to make, and I want to thank Coach Brown, DeLoss Dodds and everyone at Texas for all of their support during the process. There's no way I could have ever imagined that two jobs that mean so much to me would come up at the same time. Working for Coach Brown and Texas, and Mike (Munchak) and the Titans are opportunities of a lifetime. At the end of the day, a defensive coordinator's job with Mike and in the NFL was just to much to pass up.

"That said, there has been some misinformation out there that I do want to clarify. Money had nothing to do with this. I wouldn't have come to Texas if that was an issue, and I wasn't at all concerned about what anyone else was making. I wanted to be at Texas and there's no reason I left other than a great job opportunity, period. I hope the fans and everyone at Texas can understand and appreciate my decision and realize how difficult it was.

"I have a great relationship with Coach Brown and the Texas football program and am excited about their future. I had some really good conversations with Coach Brown before I left and appreciate all of his support. We will remain friends and supporters of one another. I texted every one of the players when I made the decision and encouraged them to keep working hard and continue the great things they're doing to get ready for the season. This is a program with outstanding kids and coaches and they're going to have a lot of success, and that made the decision even tougher. I'll be in Tennessee, but I'll still be pulling for the Longhorns as hard as I ever have."

  • Clerly an attempt at damage control.

Not a big fan of his texting the kids comment. Seems like a phone call would have been the least he could do.

Total class act!!!! I can't believe folks would disown him for moving on. Things mentioned like "he shouldn't be allowed back to UT". That's just absurd. He is a true longhorn. A man who has not forgotten where he is from.

He's replying directly to Bohls article. Knowing that Bohls was on the money from beginning to end of the whole situation, it's easy to determine who's more credible here.

A throw away self serving press release really changes your perception of the whole situation?

  • i think people are questioning how he handled the situation because a lot of the discussion in the bohls' article this morning seemed to come if not from jerry himself then someone very close to him. hence the damage control comment. if what was in bohls' article was a factual account of how jerry felt, then it was pretty bad form on his part to question the direction of the program and mack's handling of things on his way out the door - especially given that he had been in the job for all of a few weeks and admitted to only having watched a handful of games in recent years.

doesn't take away from what he did here as a player, but i think fans can be justified in having a bad taste in their mouths from what transpired over the past week.

Are you serious? He kicked us in the balls on the biggest recruiting weekend of the year. Notice how Mack didn't make a comment about him being welcome back in the future. Regardless of what we think, as far as the powers that be at UT are considered, his bridge has been napalmed.

He cared so much that he sent a bulk text to break up with his university team.

He might have kicked your balls. But we still have a head coach that can put everything back together. He did it once and he did it again and he will again and again. The head coach is the key to having everything unified. Get over it. Akina is back and everything is back to normal, right?

  • Not all the problem with timing was his fault, some of it beyond his control.

Time will heal this though I'd be suprised if he doesn't stay in the NFL like Alan Lowery from here out.

Certainly don't fault TEXAS fans for feeling a bit "left at the altar" though some of the attacks on him are over the top. Of course that doesn't justify self rightious support for Gray either.

Get used to it, Mack' s put together a blue chip staff and has developed a rep as the "finishing school" of coaching trees.

If we don't lose at least one a year from here out, I'll be suprised.

Hint: Handle it right and don't leave the Horns dangling for a week.

  • Its asinine to me all the people that are pissed at Jerry.

I guess I'm in the minority and wish him success and good luck.

He is a guy that legitimately cares about his alma mater as much as we all do, and because he accepted an unbelievable opportunity, he is crucified. I understand the disappointment but that's about it. Could he have made the decision quicker? Sure. But if he was truly struggling with what to do, maybe he needed some time. Its not like it hurt us anyway, with Akina coming back.

Some are pissed because he took the job - i agree with you, that is unfair. it is a better opportunity and he had every right to accept a promotion and large salary increase.

Others are pissed if the article this morning was true - that he was upset about where his salary ranked amongst the other staff members and was unsure about the direction of the program. i do not think it is unjustified to be angry about this.

  • Screw you Jerry. Feeble attempt at damage control.

    Frisco Horn

  • I see nothing wrong with what Jerry did. When he came to Texas, everyone knew he was over-qualified, and if he had known that there would have been an offer to be a NFL DC, he would not have come to Texas. I would guess that M.Diaz, B.Davis, and D.Akina would all probably leave (if they felt they were ready) to be NFL DC's. Coaching at Texas is a great, but when he was not even the DC here, and has a chance to become a DC, in the NFL, it was a no-brainer.

Did the timing suck? Yes, but it is a move most coaches would have made. I wish Jerry luck and hopefully he is successful and someday comes back to Texas to finish his coaching career as either a DC or head coach...twocents

  • Anyone mad enough at Gray to want him "cut off" most likely has some deep-seated personal issues and an unrealistic view of the coaching world (hint: they are mercenaries).

I'm sad to see him go, but I wish him the best in the NFL.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

    JKates

  • I seriously doubt he would be welcome back. He left his "beloved" university out to dry with almost the worst possible timing. Don't tell me you have your dream job if you are ready to bolt at the next opportunity. If it wasn't about money, that is even more upsetting. Money was the one excuse I could almost give him a pass for.

imo, and from what I understand of the situation Bohls is not on target about his assumptions regarding all this. Bohls may have been the first with the "Gray - titans job interest" story but he is not correct on this one and I don't blame Jerry or Texas for calling him out (indirectly). I am surprised that folks think because the AAS printed his lame article today and then Gray responded to the "rumors" that it was accurate. Is it because the first one with a story has to be correct? For me that is the same as guilty until proven innocent. In todays age of warp speed internet it is a shame we have this outlook.

With those two additions, the "Kirk Bohls is a hack" club just reached 10 million and three members.
