Staggering stat from Manny Diaz today

  • He estimated that about 1/3 of the rushing yards the Texas defense gave up this season came on about 20-25 plays.

  • crazy stat but not surprised. I think they gave up at least one play of 50 plus yards per game.

That is a variation of the stat he used when he was in Houston to speak. Effectively he said that the defense was good for 55 snaps, it was the five where there was a blown assignment that accounted for a large percentage of the opponents total yards. While he was right in what he said, the questions remain. Why isn't the defense maintaining gap control. Why do DBs put a shoulder into receivers instead of wrapping them up. How many of the big plays were because we gambled on defense and lost?

I personally think that more of the on field results rest with the players, having said that it is his responsibility to eliminate explosive plays by the opponents. For a bunch of different reasons, it has been a challenge all year for the Texas defense.

    Meh.

He is a salesman skilled in sound bytes and coachspeak, in other words, he's an excellent liar and bullshitter like his boss. Nothing about that stat says anything about the players or the scheme. It merely says "oh, shit, if we could just stop big plays, we'd be alright. " Well, no shit, dumbass. It's the kind of "logic" that leads to nothing other some smiling know-nothings who want to believe that he has some sort of clue.

One of things Manny also said in Houston when he visited is that the only thing the players really needed to work on was their angles and that if they could lick that, they'd be great. Right. This was the worst defense in Texas' modern history, including some coached by the likes of Bobby Jack Wright and Gary Darnell. This asshole doesn't have a frigging clue and attempting to paint any of it on the players is absurd. They looked like were doing what was laughably asked.

He also talked about how they don't focus on the bad stuff and spend most of their time lauding guys who were unsung on certain plays. It is hard not to imagine him and Mack Brown regularly sobbing in each other's arms after each loss in which the defense shit itself and these two dipshits had no idea how to solve it, because they kept handing out trophies and yet the defense kept failing to make an appearance.

Of course what he didn't mention was it was the same play concept run from several formations and personnel groupings.

  • Couldn't agree more. It's now to the point where Mack and Diaz are spouting such ridiculous crap that they believe it. How else could they continue to say these things every week?

If we win on Saturday it will be in spite of the coaching.

Everything you said was true, I still question the quality of some of our starters. We are currently playing with one legitimate DE and I am wondering if Malcolm Brown is the best of the DTs. From a scheme standpoint, our current group of line backers don't seem to be the right fit. I watched a couple of practices this year, Akina isn't coaching the guys to blow up the carrier with a shoulder.
