Staff Predictions: Texas-West Virginia

Two high-scoring offenses meet up Saturday night in Austin. The Hookem staff weighs in on which defense will step up enough to leave with a win and move to 2-0 in the Big 12.

  • Im surprised by the WVU points everyone has them scoring low

  • I really have no idea what to think other than that we will win. Yes, they put up 70 against air/Baylor, but an awful Maryland held them to 31 after letting Temple score 36 on them the week before. WVU did play terrible on the road last year and this is their first road test this year, so hopefully that trend continues.

I think Maryland came ready to play and WVU not so much. I feel this game will come down to that too. Who's defense is going to show up and make a statement? That's what this game will come down to.

maryland has the #46 scoring defense and held wvu to 31. texas has the #40 scoring defense after playing the #1 scoring offense last week.

I think there is definitely some truth in that - the Maryland game.

  • Theres no way WV and Smith took the same kind of intensity against Maryland that they're bringing to this game tomorrow. They're going to be amped, let's see how well we respond to the intensity.

OSU was leading the nation in scoring before they played Texas. Texas held them to 36...in their own house. WVU is one-dimensional in comparison to OSU.

If I told you in August that this would be a legitimate point of discussion, you would have told me to seek mental help.

Absolutely! Welcome to the family. I'm a fan of the Mountaineer program and hope you guys have great success in the BigXII...so long as it doesn't come against Texas.

  • WVU was not a good road team a year ago, and I doubt they've ever played in an environment like they will tomorrow. Factor in their awful defense, and our defense likely playing better with the atmosphere, and it's easy to see how people are predicting a cover by Texas. The flipside is the injury situation at Texas - Hicks, Brown, and Moore are major losses.

Uhhhhhhhhh . . . you realize Maryland is one of their biggest rivals. One they just bailed on.

That'd be like UT taking it easy on OU.

They played at LSU last year . . .

  • Jeff picked the exact score I predicted the first week of August. I later changed mine to 42-38 early this week based on how the defenses have looked. Now, I'm starting to think the offenses might just have a hard time dealing with the expectations and 101,000 fans in the stands. I'll stick with my two month old prediction.

  • .....Geno Smith is said to be coming into DKR with a chip on his shoulder from the lack of publicity he has gotten in the past....

He actually thinks he's been underpublicized?

Admittedly, we haven't known as much about him down here as I'm sure the fans in the northeast have for the past few years, but those guys just now joined the conference. I doubt if they knew a ton about Robert Griffin in West Virginia before last season, but down here we all knew about him.

I don't think WVU gets in the 40's. I think we do.

With all due respect i don't know where you're getting that info from. Every article and interview that has come out the last several weeks Geno has clearly stated that he doesn't really care about the Heisman...its just a trophy. He just takes one game at a time and just wants to see the team come out with the win.
