Staff Predictions: Texas-Texas Tech

  • Texas 52-20 last year, no way we have fallen that far as sorry as we have been. Texas will win say 46-43. Defense will play its best game of the year; only give up 43---Kansas was an aberration.

Is this the 1st time in Mack's career at Texas that he's been the underdog against Tech?

    IT is.

    Recruiting Outlook:
    1. cole luke commits to Notre Dame
    2. randy gregory commits to Nebraska
    3. edwin freeman names tamu as his leader

    TT Game outlook:
    1. playing in Lubbock
    2. cold front expect thru saturday am, with wind and rain
    3. TT scoring 50+ ppg
    4. UT defense is ranked 118 in nation

My crystal ball says the ONLY changes UT will make will be more of a base defense, interspersed with the "reverse ferris wheel" discombobulation that allows 65 yard td's.
Most of the UT fans will be gone by halftime due to the inclement weather and another failure of Mack's dream SEC offense to pound the bal--if they would let Mack run into those stacked defenses a couple of times this could end.
TT scores early and often, as UT attempts to keep up. In the end, it's.............................
    TT 72 UT 34
Halftime: Mack says he just wants his guys to go out there and have fun.
Postgame: Mack says our defense played a lot better than last week, and our overall plan is right on track.

I want to laugh at the absurdity of that statement but then I want to cry because its probably true. Our defense is that bad

TT defense has been a little over rated. They are improved but this year they have been good against lesser teams and poor against good teams (wvu being the exception). I believe they have shown they are exploitable and I hope Hardin is allowed to take advantage and Manny keeps it simple with the superior talent we have all around. 42-24 Hook em'

That's true, so here's hoping our offense is at the "good teams" level. Defense? If they keep it basic (like in the KU 2nd half) maybe, just maybe...

  • You would think that the defense would actualy show up and play at least once this season....... but naaaaah, they won't. I have been perfect in my predictions so far so I am going with the usual forecast....The score will be 0-0 at the start of the game. The team that plays best and scores the most points will win. But I could be wrong.

  • Bobby, Im not sure if its the first time we are underdogs. My hope is the Red Raiders wont be able to run against the Longhorns. I hope Tech goes to those screen passes...this is a match up that Texas hopes that Tech will give them. I dont know if Tech has the brute strength to bully us like OU did on both sides of the ball. Also, I dont think this is the best offense Texas has seen this season...and I think Texas can run the ball on Tech...just a gut feeling. I hope Im right about that. At the end of the day its all about running and stopping the run. If Texas does that it will win...maybe win big too. This really is a defining moment. Frankly, I fully expected Texas to be 6-2 in week 10. I thought they would lose both games in the OSU/WVU/OU stretch which it did do. What no one expected was Tech and KState being in the mix. I think we will eliminate Tech from the mix in a few hours. Is this 2003 all over again? a 65-13 OU blowout...firemackbrown.com....10-3 season with KState winning the conference. I sure hope its 2003 again...because in 2004 season we won the Rose Bowl and then 2005 season the national title at the Rose Bowl. I think the national title game is at the Rose Bowl next season! Hook Em!

  • Tech punts the ball and downs it at the 2. We call a running play up the middle with Bergeron and we get tackled for a safety.

Wait a minute, Tech punting would require our defense to make a stop. Never mind! We're just gonna get mudholed and Bill Little will spin some kind of life lesson from this the following evening.

The problem with predicting this game is we have no idea what game plan we will show up with.

So far this year we have been schizophrenic to say the least with regards to our offensive gameplanning. If Mack meddles and gives voice to the self doubts that permeate his psyche in these sorts of games I could see him calling for a more conservative approach in an effort to dominate TOP like he tried to do against WVU and OU. If we do that, we lose and it plays right into the hands of TT. The strength of their D is the interior of their line. Hyder and Simmons are actually playing at a really high level for them. Repeatedly trying to pound Bergeron and Gray at the interior will yield predictable results. Their weakness along the DL is their ends. Even with the deficiencies we have at TE and FB, we can have some success setting the edge against them with our pin and pull and power sweeps and this should be the approach. It will open up everything else in Harsin's play book if we do this and get them to adjust to try and contain it.

On Defense, We need to stop the DL dumbF&%kery on 1st and 2nd downs and save the stunts and twists for obvious passing downs only (and even then i would employ them very sparingly). Okafor has a real mismatch against McDaniel as do most of our guys along the line. The only guy on their Oline I see as decent is Le'Raven Clark (he is going to be really good one day) but he is a RS Freshman. We can line up and beat them straight up, and if we do, Doege has shown a propensity for mistakes when pressured.

If we come in playing the same asinine games on Defense and with an uber-conservative ball control plan on offense we get boatraced. If not, we can win this game but until I see what our plan is, I'm not making any predictions.

Local Sports Radio commentators say Tech has good speed on the outside. The Wildcats wore them down. The SR commentators say Texas has to run N-S. Texas has won many games in the series by executing that game plan. Can they do so manna?

Its really sad. My Tech friends that I have known for years have been talking smack. This has never happened. Having to go to a watching party with a bunch of Techies - I will have to start drinking early to deal with this crap.

I really cannot stand this team.

I watched a Tech game with mostly Tech fans the year Chance brought Texas back. There were some very inebriated and angry Tech fans right after the game. I just tried to not grin too large. I was there by myself and some of the Red Raider fans and I were cordial to one another. The most angry RR fan was a woman. She was so pissed she went outside. ) Hook em Chance.

~~Here is a review of the 2003 Tech game and the comeback engineered by then Back-up #5 Chance Mock. Vince Y. was benched during the game.

    Saturday, November 15, 2003:
A game that would rack up over 1,000 combined offensive yards, the No. 6 ranked Longhorns took on the unranked Red Raiders at DKR Stadium. With a little over two minutes left in the game, Texas trailed Texas Tech, 40-35. Under the orders of Mack Brown, Vince Young was benched and junior quarterback Chance Mock took the field. Starting at his own fourteen yard line, Mock drove the Longhorns seventy-five yards in one minute and seventeen seconds. With forty-six seconds remaining on the clock, Mock threw an end zone strike to B.J. Johnson, putting the Longhorns in front. He polished off his incredible performance by rushing for a two-point conversion—clenching a 43-40 win for Texas.

Mack believes we are going to win out. I'm gonna hold him to it.

I think we can agree that quote means Mack is either delusional or blowing hot air. No doubt the talent is there, but the product we've seen on the field tells me (particularly the defense) they are going to get a new hole ripped into them by K State for sure and most likely Tech.

That is about as ugly of a stat as one can come across for a big time program like Texas.

You' ve got to be kidding/or trolling. EVERYONE and their dog can run it down our throats. Tech actually has a capable back in Kenny Williams so why wouldn't they? He alone will run at least 200 yards. fingergun

  • I guess we'll see. When they simplified the defense in the second half the defense did quite well.... yielding only 3 points ...on the road against a team that ran 100 yds in the 2nd Q

    Second Half - Kansas Offense
    3 plays 4 yards Punt
    9 plays 25 yds Punt
    14 plays 61 yds FG
    2 plays 0 yds

Lets see if it works again. Mack pretty much owns Tech...wouldnt you say?

  • TT offense > Kansas offense. Tech is ranked 10th in the country compared to 100th for Kansas. Apples and oranges, don't you think?

    Simkin

  • Yea true but Im more worried about a team that runs first then passes... another X factor is how will we run? If having MB back makes any difference - and I think it will - then our defense may be on the field less. I feel good about playing Tech. This is a defining moment in the season....maybe for the future too for these young guys....I say they will rise to the occasion. Im confident. I dont care about stats...especially in college football. Heck, weve already played #1 OKState #3 Baylor #13 WVU ....so who cares that Tech is #11? Its just another game IMO. Since were talking stats...we have the same record as Tech at 6-2....the only difference is we didnt get whipped by 4 TDs last week. Techs defense has given up 98 points the last two games against much weaker offenses than Texas has played so far.... Hook Em! Heres to a victory!

That was against an offense that didn't throw a single pass in the second half until late in the 4th quarter. Texas won't be able to keep it that simple and stop an offense as sophisticated as Tech's, and a fifth-year senior QB as opposed to a RS freshman.

  • This Texas team cannot score points against anything that even comes close to resembling a defense. To those who think we will score 30 or 40 a d still lose are insane. Texas will NOT score more than 13 points! Unless the third string d comes in to close the game. This saddens me, but O line will lose us this game plus many more. Texas 13 tech 55. If tech plays scrubs in the last few minutes we will have two additional TDs
