  • I don't recall open practices in the Spring, just the Spring Game.

PH - MB has scheduled at least one, and some years two, open Spring practices. Last year was on 3/2.

I do recall Mack discussing closing Fall practices going forward.

  • I have no issue with all closed practices during the spring and summer. They have a lot of work to do.

  • I just want to know who steps up at Wr. Is it gonna be someone who "bleeds for the program", or someone who is a freaking hoss? I have faith in Wyatt.

Couldn't agree more. This season is a perfect opportunity to sneak up on our Big XII-2 foes with new schemes. No sense in spoiling it for them with any glimpse.

  • I just don't see why they don't open 3-5 practices in the spring and have it at the stadium where crowd control wouldn't be an issue and the kids wouldn't have fans too close by.

If high schools can handle open practices, I think the University of Texas could figure it out.

  • We want... information.

    Information.

    Information.

    Who are you?

    The new number two.

    Who is number one?

    You are number six.

I am not a number! I am a free man!

I also think the issue that has been snowballing in recent offseason camps is the uncontrolled reporting of injuries that occur, or the speculation. It conflicts with the policy of player privacy rights. Mack alluded to that last year and looks like they have come to a conclusion on that situation. Personally, I don't think it is Mack's preference.

There are other schools who don't hide behind that rule. If a player is injured in a game does that also violate the privacy rights of the player? Should we close games? I think it annoys Mack, but I don't think it violates any policies.

I'm of the opinion that Texas is a big stage and having open practices is actually helpful in that regard. Texas needs to get away from the sandbagging mentality in general and I think a significant portion of the decision to close practices comes from being worried about fans/websites reporting about scheme changes. There was a lot of questioning of the direction of the offense going into the last season by fans. I don't think Mack wants to deal with any questions right now and he has always wanted to control the message to fans about what it happening with the football team.

At the end of the day having open practices or closed ones is not a big deal. I'm fine with closed practices. I just wish Mack would step up and say, "Hey we're closing practice because we need to overhaul our offense, defense, and special teams and I want a very controlled environment to do that. I don't want our players or coaches thinking or reading about hundreds of comments online everyday this spring." Done. Closed matter, good leader.

And you're on a big soapbox. The reporting of in-game injuries are is pretty much controlled. Sometimes we hear and sometimes we don't. This game is a chess match. If Mack needs to hide behind injury reporting as a means to an end to control who has access to watching his practices then that is his prerogative. That has absolutely nothing to do with leadership or what other schools do.

This yea,r more than any other in recent memory, the team needs as much detail work in implementing schemes. That means right out of the chute. Open practices don't expose much in the way of scheme anyway. Mack doesn't want any distractions. I'm good with that. You're apparently not. Closed matter.

How is someone seeing an injury at a practice different from seeing an injury at a game?

The game is a chess match... there's no reason why closing or opening practices needs to be. This doesn't need to be cloak and dagger here just make a decision and clearly state it.

There is nothing about open practice that keeps them from implementing scheme. The idea that somehow they need to hide what they are going to working on at this stage doesn't make much sense... we're talking about base packages here. That's actually one of the major issues that the previous offensive staff had: they would try to hide their gameplans for future opponents and they never developed a base offense in most years... just gameplan after gameplan.

I would add that in the very near future there will probably be an unprecedented amount of attention on Longhorn practices... I would bet that the new network is going to want to do something there.

  • zero problem with closes practices. They should all be closed IMO. Team needs to work. Understand as a fan wanting to see things, but they dont owe us access
