Spread Offense

  • BhamHorn said...

I've read multiple times recently that folks think Texas is going back to the spread on offense. However, I feel like its also painfully obvious that Texas has been making an effort to go back to the power run game and play action pass. I feel like Mack himself has made that clear.

Now that Swoopes has committed, I feel like everyone assumes we're abandoning the style of offense we've been moving towards and reverting back to our old ways. Let's not forget we still have 3 more years of Ash and 4 years of Connor Brewer.

Is there any reason other than Swoopes to believe that we are abandoning our new offense and going back to the zone read anytime soon? Obviously Swoopes ran it in high school, but I don't think it's that far fetched to groom Swoopes for 3 years and have him play in our current style offense.

Can't go with the Spread until there is a Receiving Unit.

  • Spread ≠ zone read

Many teams run spread concepts and don't feature the zone read. There's no reason Texas can't spread it out without zone read. Zone read could also be a base play out of a non-spread emphasis offense.

Agreed!!! The personnel that UT is recruiting is for a pro-style offense. Swoopes going to have to develop into RG3 or Russell Wilson to be full-time QB1.

    Yes. Run first, Play Action.

  • By the way, anyone that can't see the benefit of a mobile QB and/or the spread - someone who just wants a pro-style offense just cuz that's what he wants - is missing boat on football offense. Make the defense defend it all, whether by formation, spreading, QB having to be accounted for, etc.

Saban and Carroll beg to differ.

They run mostly pro-style, although they do run spread concepts as well, but they have reasons. I'm referencing fans who talk out of their asses. Slight difference.

Their reasons should be the same reasons we run a pro-style offense as well. You can take a serviceable quarterback, mold him into a game manager, and play ball control and compliment it with a stingy defense. It's easier to accomplish than trying to find the next "Vince Young".

USC, Stanford, and ND (under Charlie Weis) don't have any problems putting up points.

There are definitely reasons to run that type of offense. I am not anti-pro style.

Many fans don't seem to understand that "spread" doesn't equal "needing the next VY." UH has been operating out of the spread for a decade and you could outrun Kolb or Keenum. Spread is a concept, not the zone read. Leach, Gundy, Mumme et. al. use the Air Raid attack out of a spread. Chip Kelly and Urban Meyer will option you out of it with a mobile QB. Hell, the Pistol is really a single back spreadish type concept.

Yeah I understand that, but I don't want to run that offense either. When those spreads face a superior defense the receivers get jammed at the line, or the quarterback has an off day and everything unravels. Whether it's Vince running the zone read or Kolb, Keenum, or Harrell running the spread, almost all of the weight of success lies on the shoulders of the QB.

  • I personally believe you will continue see a higher quality of recruits when recruiting for the pro style offense compared to a spread. There will always be exceptions to every statement, but for the most part very few players from spread offenses make an impact in the NFL or make it all. The NFL is about big, physical, athletic linemen, running backs that can break tackles and quarterbacks that can make pro passes and not rely on a spread system. That is why I have always believed OU could get the players they want. Their offense better prepared players for the next level. The same for Alabama and USC.

This! I think most of us understand their are 2 types of spread:

    1. Pass-happy spreads that most of the Big 12 teams runs.

    2. Zone-Read spread ran by UT with VY, UF with Tebow, Rich Rod teams and etc.

I don't want UT to run either spread.

I prefer what USC, Stanford, and ND under Charlie Weis does. A balanced, multiple, power-running Pro-Style Offense.

I agree. UT running a Pro-Style offense can be a recruiting tool. You can sell kids we run an NFL-Style offense while the rest of the Big 12 (and A&M) run a college pass-happy spread.

To me the spread is great for Tech, because for the majority of their recruits that was their last stop at playing football. Spread/system quarterbacks have historically been some of the biggest busts in the NFL. Receivers and backs have not done must better. Now the spread has helped put defensive backs into the NFL.

"Can be" being the operative phrase. Look around the state. The kids are running the spread.

True...but the way UT recruits they should be able to pick & choose who fits their offense. They're doing that right now the last couple of years most notably at OL, RB & TE.

Somewhat disagree. OU has not run the football as well they would like for a couple of seasons. It was a point of emphasis last spring for them and will be again this spring.

not as well no, but we are able to go 5 wide to power I to pro-set in hurry up mode. So, its possible and according to the stars, you guys get more talent, so you should be able to.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.
