Something that's becoming clear with Barnes' teams

  • Closing games and playing well in the clutch are an issue. If you take away T.J., D.J. and Durant, it's pretty clear that this program isn't one that handled end-game situations well.

  • Poor FT shooting haunts this team throughout the game, but is most noticeable at the end of games.

Why, when evaluating our teams in all sports, do people insist on discounting the results produced by our best players. If you take away some of the best players ever from any team, they would have trouble. It is players like that who close out games.

Esentially, you are saying that Coach Barnes, given a bunch of mediocre to average players, would produce mediocre to average results. Given better players, he produces better results. Given a national player of the year (Ford) coupled with five other guys that had been playing together for three years, he went to a Final Four. Coaching isn't magic. It's getting your players to play to their ability.

Would it be fair to say that, without Durant and Westbrook, OKC wouldn't be the hottest team in the NBA? Does that mean that their coach isn't really very good?

The best thing about the current Texas roster is that every player shows some talent. They lack experience and a floor leader. Only time and a coach who continues to push them to be better will cure that situation.

  • It's odd, because there was a time when Barnes was excellent at it.

  • Thank you texatom. You are spot on. I didn't even expect them to be in the game at the end, much less let it get away. Felix is a freshman and is playing a ton of minutes. This whole team is very raw and inexperienced but I am encouraged with how much talent there seems to be developing.

    sundancekid

  • They don't although I feel Kabongo would've been key in pulling out the WVa & UCLA games.

  • A JUCO team shouldn't be in the game with the #4 team in the country. Let's not forget that.

And I can tell you from experience that my teams are a lot better at closing games when I have really good players, and not so good when I don't. That's true for every coach in every sport. I can also tell you that coach Barnes works on end of game situations in EVERY practice, so it isn't like he's ignoring the problem.

The team after T.J. didn't have these issues, of course it was also the only time he had a team made up of upperclassmen he had recruited.

and yes, this is the worst FT shooting team he has ever had, but that's on the players. Lewis's huge miss of the front end of the 1 and 1, not only kept Texas from regaining the lead but also lead to Holmes picking up his 4th "foul."

It also hurts not having the best player on the team, who is also the primary ball handler.

  • In my opinion Barnes does not think FTs are important and/or they are a point of inphisies in practice. Tend to think the same of offense.

Your opinion sucks if you really think that.

Truth. This is an all too common theme with Barnes

He's not wrong. Barnes deserves criticism for allowing Texas to get to a point 3 years in a row where there was very few upper-classmen on the roster (and having open scholarships to boot), but the Horns have lost games late primarily due to turnovers, which is something Barnes has only a little control over. Great effort by the basketball team IMO.

Complete BS. Barnes can draw up plays, like the out of bounds play that lead to an easy layup for McClellan. Most in bound plays lead to a wide open shot for the guy he wants to take them. Like the 3 pointer that Holmes got against WVU or the 3 pointer he got yesterday against KU, both after TOs.

Sometimes the players don't execute it correctly, like the play yesterday late in the game where a bad pass from Feliz negated what would have been an easy layup for McClellan.

Well, the turnovers come from the offense don't they?

No kidding. It's not like Barnes is coaching them to make poor decisions or lazy passes. I know it's easy to crap on him for his offensive shortcomings, but our offense has statistically been much better than you would believe if you were to listen to the folks posting online. This year is a year where we were going to be young and have trouble already prior to Kabongo being ruled ineligible. Sans Myck, we're relying on a guy who was expected to play 5-10 minutes a game that came in a little overweight to lead the NCAA in minutes/game as a freshman. Not a good recipe for being able to close out games with authority.

  • The loss of Kabongo killed this team. Think about his past teams, and he's always had a guy to end games.

1998 - Muoneke, Clack or Mihm
1999 - Muoneke, Mihm or Owens
2000 - Evans, Kelly, Owens (until he got hurt)
    2001 - Ford
    2002 - Ford
    2003 - Mouton, Ivey, Tucker
    2004 - Gibson, Tucker(declared ineligible), Buckman, Aldridge(got hurt)
    2005 - Entire starting 5
    2006 - Durant
    2007 - Augustin
    2008 - Abrams, James
    2009 - James, Brown, Bradley
2010 - Brown, Hamilton, Thompson, Joseph
    2011 - Brown
2012 - Should have been Kabongo
