Why, when evaluating our teams in all sports, do people insist on discounting the results produced by our best players. If you take away some of the best players ever from any team, they would have trouble. It is players like that who close out games.
Esentially, you are saying that Coach Barnes, given a bunch of mediocre to average players, would produce mediocre to average results. Given better players, he produces better results. Given a national player of the year (Ford) coupled with five other guys that had been playing together for three years, he went to a Final Four. Coaching isn't magic. It's getting your players to play to their ability.
Would it be fair to say that, without Durant and Westbrook, OKC wouldn't be the hottest team in the NBA? Does that mean that their coach isn't really very good?
The best thing about the current Texas roster is that every player shows some talent. They lack experience and a floor leader. Only time and a coach who continues to push them to be better will cure that situation.

Thank you texatom. You are spot on. I didn't even expect them to be in the game at the end, much less let it get away. Felix is a freshman and is playing a ton of minutes. This whole team is very raw and inexperienced but I am encouraged with how much talent there seems to be developing.

A JUCO team shouldn't be in the game with the #4 team in the country. Let's not forget that.
And I can tell you from experience that my teams are a lot better at closing games when I have really good players, and not so good when I don't. That's true for every coach in every sport. I can also tell you that coach Barnes works on end of game situations in EVERY practice, so it isn't like he's ignoring the problem.

He's not wrong. Barnes deserves criticism for allowing Texas to get to a point 3 years in a row where there was very few upper-classmen on the roster (and having open scholarships to boot), but the Horns have lost games late primarily due to turnovers, which is something Barnes has only a little control over. Great effort by the basketball team IMO.

The loss of Kabongo killed this team. Think about his past teams, and he's always had a guy to end games.

Something that's becoming clear with Barnes' teams
