Some post-practice notes from Mack Brown

  • Mack met with the media for about 15 minutes after practice. I'll have more later but here are some highlights:

    - He said if the Longhorns played a game today Case McCoy would be the backup. Yesterday was Jalen Overstreet's day to get more reps as the No. 3 and today was more to see what Connor Brewer and Tyrone Swoopes could do.

    - Camrhon Hughes has still not been cleared for full-contact practice.

    - Tevin Jackson was limited today with a sore foot.

    - Mack is anticipating that Jackson Jeffcoat could be cleared for full-contact practice after spring break, but even if he is the staff might opt to hold him out.

    - He likes that there's an effort to get Daje Johnson, Johnathan Gray and Malcolm Brown on the field at the same time. We saw some of that today with Brown as a fullback, Gray as the tailback and Johnson in the slot.

    - The staff is trying to decide what to do at tight end. If they are substituting less then either Geoff Swaim and Greg Daniels need to be legitimate receiving threats or M.J. McFarland, Miles Onyegbule and John Harris need to be able to block consistently well.

    - He likes what he's seen the last two days from Kennedy Estelle. He wants to have a second line with no drop-off and figures by the time spring is done Estelle and Flowers could give him seven legitimate starting options. He feels Desmond Harrison will be in that mix and possibly one of the freshmen.

    - With the ends, he spoke highly of Bryce Cottrell and Caleb Bluiett.

    - Mack admitted that there's a good battle at MLB between Dalton Santos and Steve Edmond. Mack made it sound like Edmond is being challenged to cut weight like Santos did.

    - Mack feels they've got six or seven legitimate front-line starters in the secondary. He trusts Duane Akina to come up with the right combinations.

  • Any reason as a HC he didn't demand this last year? Preferred to throw the previous OC under the bus?

Damn... So now Mack's not meddling enough in the offense? I think the fact that two were freshmen and one was injured for most of the season played a bigger role in not seeing that formation last year than anything else.

I'm going to be an optomist and focus on the "if a game was played today" part of the statement. The more reps Brewer gets, the better shot he has taking over the #2 positon.

  • I still dont see why the staff dedicates time to McCoy. I understand that his brother was one of the best, but Case is almost out the door. Time and effort should be spent on developing Brewer and Jalen to take over the backup position and compete for the starting spot in 2015. Anyways, this is MO. I could be totally wrong on this....

  • Thankfully we're not playing a game today.

  • I couldn't care less about the backup QB.

  • Really glad to see young guys like Cottrell, Bluiett & Santos making waves, but the most encouraging
comment is "they've got six or seven legitimate front-line starters in the secondary". THAT came as big
news for our D, when you look back and see huge fall-offs after Kenny V & Diggs last season...at least,
down the stretch, we saw significant improvement out of Byndum last fall--that splendid Tech game
seemed to light a fire under his hind-end, finally...

Now, IF our front 7 can pick it up several notches & learn gap control, we just might be able to
stop several of our Big 12 potent offenses & could spring us into a BCS game...I do think our O
will score enough points to win 10-11 games, assuming no critical & untimely injuries hit us...

  • Why didn't Mack speak highly of Bryce Cottrell and Caleb Bluiett last year? Did he forget they were on the team? I swear. I am almost at my breaking point with Mack. Forgetting players shows he is out of touch, senile even.

Probably because they were just freshman.
    Just a guess though.

He is the back-up QB. Right now Texas has a shot at the NC, just like every team in America. You need to prepare for the up coming season. If Texas loses a couple games, I would guess that changes. It could change if Overstreet or Swoopes progress faster than expected. If the season started tomorrow and Ash went down for the opener, Case is he best option. It is not a scenario I would want to see, but it is reality.

I apologize for the double post. I am not sure how I did that

Wonder if a position change to the DL could be in Edmond's future if he loses out to Santos this offseason.

I am with nyou there. Brewer has a lot of upside.

  • Regarding the TEs, it seems like we've had this problem of them being inconsistent catching the ball or blocking since J-Mike left. MJ needs to step it up. He could be an unstoppable weapon if he could be more consistent.

Okay, he can't win if thy redshirt or don't. One of these was on offense and hurt. Cool. The economy is shit too, Mack is the blame.

Yeah, I don't have much faith in that position right now. Hard for me to believe somebody transforms into an all-around TE in this offseason based on what we saw last year.

    I never know, though.

  • Whenever Mack says "we've got X amount of players who are legitimate starters/would start at any other school in the Big 12", etc, I've learned to take that number, divide it by the number of conference championships Mack has won, subtract one, and then round down to give myself a better estimate of how many players are actually good enough to be starters at the moment.
