So . . . who do you want for the new basketball coach?

Bierce, what are your thoughts on Anthony Grant? Not a ton of skins on the wall, but he's had success and can obviously recruit.

He dresses well. I'm not entirely sure he is that great of a recruiter, and he has no contacts in Texas that I am aware of.

On the one hand, you have to like his ability to lock up his own area, but I don't know if he brings much connection to other areas. He has 3 big name recruits in the last couple of years. Lacey grew up 100 miles from Tuscaloosa. Pollard not much farther away, and the Mississippi options kind of fell apart for Pollard. The only player of impact on the Alabama roster from outside of Alabama or a stone's throw from Alabama is Trevor Releford.

Right now, Alabama's class for 2013 is a highly regarded center from Alabama and pretty good PF from Tennessee who has been playing the last couple of season at Christ School in NC. He missed on the big target of Cat Barber who is from a school less than 100 miles from where he coached at VCU.

I don't fault a guy for locking up his region first and then expanding the sweep, but you'd think a guy who grew up in Florida, spent years as an assistant at Florida and who coached for years at VCU would already have a broader sweep.

Exactly. It's all about assistants that can bring you players. Especially in basketball.

  • If Texas is serious about winning now then their first step is to money whip Saban for football and Self for basketball. Those guys can recruit anywhere, you may not like how they do it, but they've been doing it for over a decade each and NCAA doesn't touch them. Calipari would be interesting but he'll leave your program in a wreck from cheating when he leaves. I do whatever figure it takes to land Saban and Self, might as well make that LHN money good for something.

  • Personally, I'm not overly concerned with a lack of Texas ties. I think those can be built easily over time with an introduction and success on the court.

Being here in AL, I've watched Bama play a good bit over the years. Watching his teams play vs. Gottfried's has been night & day, imo. Much more discipline on the court. And while Gottfried was a good recruiter, he left the cupboard pretty bare, imo, partly due to injuries.

Edit: meant to quote Bierce re: Anthony Grant

I don't think Texas has a shot in hell of landing either.

Nor am I. In basketball, we're going to be recruiting more on a national level than in football anyway. Besides, regardless what podunk school, when the University of Texas calls, they'll figure out who it is.

  • I just want someone new. I'm tired of watching a team that looks to have no clue to what they are supposed to be doing. In previous years it was limited to the offensive side but this years team seems to have no clue on either end.

I know, I know...this team is young- shouldn't be judged on three games. I'm judging it on the past years not just this years.

  • After tonight I have this strange but profound sadness that Bo Ryan is too old to want to make a switch. Put him in a rejuvenator, turn him back to 40 or so, and bring him in. (Of course, you have to appreciate a deliberate kind of game featuring tough defense and patience, but curiously effective offense.)

He's had one player who had real NBA ability in his entire tenure at Wisconsin--Devin Harris. Oh, sure, there has been Steimsma who is a 3 ppg backup for a couple of years and Tucker played a little for a couple of years and maybe Leuer will hang on for a little while, but Ryan has 11 straight NCAA tournament appearances with a bunch of guys who just get at it and work.

Wisconsin just took its 5th straight win in Assembly Hall, beating #2 Indiana, three days after blasting #12 Illinois 74-51, and it now sits alone atop the B1G at 4-0. The Badgers might not stay there, but what a coach they have.

Aren't you just making a case for a coach who wins a lot of games but has never sniffed a championship? I admire what he does, but it seems like he is at his ceiling.

  • I'm seconding or thirding or whatever the Shaka Smart candidacy.

If nothing more than his uptempo gameplans are the opposite of Barnesball and the games might actually be fun to watch for the first time in a while.

  • In basketball, we need to be recruiting nationally, so having Texas ties doesn't mean anything to me. I mean, if we're calling within Texas, I should hope the coach has heard of the University of Texas.

Yes, in a lot of ways, his career is much like the career of Barnes. There are some differences. Some conference tournament titles for Ryan, for one thing. Tempo of the offense for another.

I was just admiring the results of a guy who always got what appears to be the maximum return from his players, and while Wisconsin is a great school, it was always running behind two or three Big Ten schools in allure to prospects, not to mention the added difficulty of attracting out of state talent to such a cold environment.

I wasn't suggesting bringing him in. I was just wondering what he might have done with what were clearly state of the art facilities in 2003, a bigger budget throughout his tenure, and gobs of in state talent available, but maybe it would have been no more than what he has done in Madison.

I know he is controversal but his 40 minutes of hell was great basketball as far as I was concerned.

    Calling The General!!

I couldn't handle Bo. He does coach 'em up, but his record is about the same as Barnes's and his tournament record isn't quite as good. And, of course, he is 65.

I know you remember the second half they played against Butler in 2011, which was quite Cincinnatiesque.

Buzz has moved to the top of my list. Stevens would be on it, if I thought there were a chance at all. I still like Jamie Dixon. My darkhorse would be Dana Altman (A good X-and-O guy who looks like he can recruit at a BCS level -- four years younger than Barnes). I don't have a handle on Shaka Smart. To me, he would be a complete guess.

Tex, I wish there was a way to express my thoughts better. Love him or hate him, Noland had a killer mean streak to his teams. They played to win. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Barnes (and Mack and Augie) all coach the not to lose philosophy. I would like to see Ut play to beat the crap out of the other team.hookem

  • If Barnes were to become gone from Texas then I'd like,

    Sean Miller

I'd also spend a bazillion dollars on assistant coaches to get a top recruiting staff.

  • Oh, I don't want to lock out a Lanier or a Springmann, either, depending on the circumstances.

Before you say, I want someone with coaching experience, remember that Tom Izzo was an assistant to Jud Heathcote.
