So TJ's gone ... Hey, DGB!

  • Hey, DGB. Glad you got your people over here checking us out. So yeah, you probably heard a lot of us are down about TJ. We were kind of looking forward to him joining us for a while. That's all right. We'll get over it -- right about the time you get done doing all the thinking you need to decide where you want to spend your college days. (And nights. You can have those too. Austin's been known to have nights.)

See, we think you'll be considering these very things.

The quarterback who's coming to Texas this year -- the guy passing to you if, you know, you're at Texas -- is the guy handpicked to follow in Kellen Moore's footsteps at Boise State by the guy who handpicked Kellen Moore in the first place. When nobody else in the FBS saw anything special in Kellen Moore -- well, except Idaho, and we won't count them -- Bryan Harsin did. (OK, well, actually, it was Boise's defensive coordinator who really wanted him, but hey, it's a better story this way.) Then Harsin took this kid from way off the beaten track and made him into the winningest quarterback in college football history. When Harsin was still at Boise, the guy he was going to take in the 2012 class was another kid off the beaten path. Kid out of Arizona. When Harsin came to Texas to put in his offense, he was back on the phone with Connor Brewer. To come to Texas and be his Kellen Moore Part II. Part I did all right by his receivers. Seems to me one or two of 'em's in the League.

Arkansas, huh? Bobby Petrino? Here's a thought.
In 15 years as a head coach or an offensive coordinator, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino has had exactly two receivers drafted by the NFL: DJ Williams in 2011 and JR Russell in 2005. Fifth and seventh rounds. And one of them was a tight end. Fifteen years, two NFL draft picks at receiver. We know. We were as surprised as you are.
In his last 15 years as a head coach -- we'll stop there just to keep it fair -- Mack Brown has had eight receivers taken by the NFL draft, five of them in the first three rounds.
    Eight to two. Just sayin'.

And that's just the NFL stuff. You've got a lot of college to enjoy before you go down that road. A lot of fun to enjoy.

You see the freshman class Texas had this season, and the 2012 recruiting class coming in this year. The next three years at Texas -- you can stay for four if you'd like; none of us would mind -- are going to be one seriously sick run. You might win more individual awards at Arkansas Maybe not; don't know who's going to come after Wilson, and you'd only have him for one year. But, say, you wind up at Arkansas -- if you want to play for a national championship you're going to have to get past Bama, LSU and South Carolina to make it out of the SEC and into the 2013 BCS Championship game against … hey, look, it's TEXAS.

Hey, you won't be able to beat 'em, so join 'em instead. Come on down to Texas and join the fun. We'll keep the light on for you.

Proof positive I should never post after a late shift and a third beer.

    Burp.

  • Should you live to be 100, please don't post idiotic drivel like this again. Open letters to recruits are so, so ... Aggy.

I'm pretty sure he was joking when writing it. I don't think he, or anyone else thinks DGB is going to actually read what he wrote.

    Lighten up

"Pavlov was this scientist guy, you know, and every time this dog would ring a bell, Pavlov would eat."

  • Actually, VaHorn, as I read it back after morning coffee (out here on the left coast), I have to agree with your assessment. I think I've become such a lightweight over the years that, after a long night of work followed by three beers, I can get pretty ... drivelly. If it has reached aggy lengths, I certainly need to rein that in.

But, as Kelso said, I don't actually believe DGB is reading. Please. Just sort of having a little fun and thinking aloud -- OK, in print -- while watching the DVR'd Cotton Bowl at 2 in the morning. Started looking up Petrino's history with receivers and that led me to this. Bed would probably have been the wiser option.

After seeing his 1-handed catch in the Army game, I wouldn't complain if you do one of these threads a day. He is what we need.
