Snap judgments - Bad loss

Is it strange that I didn't feel an ounce of hatred for Patterson the entire game? I watched him coach, I watched him motivate, and I watched him do all the things we wish Mack would do.

I've officially decided who I want to be the next head coach of our football team.

15 more games and maybe I'll have something to look forward to in the offseason again.

I think your feelings sum up a good portion of the fan base.
I have been numb to the athletic department for quite some time.

Yeah. Same here. Had that discussion with my dad while watching the game. We're getting our asses kicked and I realized I was no emotionally invested in it. At all. I just don't give a damn anymore and probably won't until Mack is gone.

Yes, the "we are young" excuse is hard to use when the team across from you is younger.

THIS...And the "we are young" excuse is played out. Other teams have Frosh QB's starting and doing well. Our "young" kids are basically Sophs and Jr's now after 11 games. No more excuses.

Very true and I would add more athletic. I don't think we saw a team this year with more overall team speed. (than TCU) Lou Holtz has commented for a couple years that overall TCU was the fastest team in college football.

I don't like saying this, but you have to change DCs. I don't think it's even a question after this.

It's the same thing he did against Iowa State and other games this year but this time he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar one too many times.

You just don't have to play that kind of risky defense to win against some teams. It's absolutely counter productive.

Bobby, with all due respect, why don't you like saying it ?

Isn't your job here to call a spade a spade ?

BTW, enjoyed and agreed with your analysis.

  • The offensive line play has been sub par for a while now. Thats an issue that has yet to be addressed by the coaching staff.

I know you're being sarcastic but I'll spell it out for those that are unaware. Texas can't use age as an excuse against a TCU team when the Horned Frogs are younger than the Horns.

But Bobby I am sure Mack will use the youth excuse and no one attending the press conference will have the guts call him out on it, by pointing out that TCU is even younger!

I agree with your post about what Mack will say about youth and he will add injuries. (BTW TCU lost 20 players since last year that would have contributed this year). I think the press is beginning to understand Mack's act. He acted like last night the loss was the fault of the press. (In the post game presser)

To me, this game is very simple to post-mortem.

    1. Texas' OL simply isn't good enough to establish the run against a solid DL / Front 7. It's a personnel issue at this point. Further, Ash is a play-action QB, so when you can't run the ball at all, the play-action is ineffective and the TCU DBs can take risks for INTs. Basic offense here.

    2. Texas' DL scheme (and LB to a lesser extent) is just foolish. There's no reason to take the risks that Texas does with it's DL, via slants, stunts, loops, etc... No reason. It's a coaching issue, not a personnel issue. TCU gashed Texas with the run in the first half, and had all the points they needed (14) by halftime. The defensive game plan should have been really simple - stack the box and make TCU's QB complete lots of passes to gain first downs and score points. Instead, TCU won with only 7 completions, and ran the ball for 220 yards against slanting DTs, and looping DEs. Just dumb, dumb, dumb.

    Outstanding post!!! 100% agree

This is spot-on. On top of that, it seems that Harsin hasn't figured out how to use all of the weapons at his disposal. Very frustrating.

  • Two things wrong with this team. We refuse to just line up and play football, even against inferior talent. And we do not put the right players on the field in the right positions. And I guess there is a third which relates to the other two, we have no intensity which is a reflection of the coaching staff. Clap, clap, clap....

When do we stop saying we need a new coordinator and finally deal with the real issue? This is Bobby Bowden without all of the success first.

  • Good writeup as usual, Bob. Thanks for calling it as you see it.

This game deserves to be a regime changing loss. Will you please take as much room for the bottom ___(fill in number) as is needed this week. The offensive line will probably take five spaces by themselves.

I like Mack Brown but he doesn't know how to fix this. That is the third game this year (OU and KU) that our guys have come out listless and unprepared. They weren't read to play and that should never, ever happen. And it wasn't just the defense. It was the whole team.

    Crazy Horn

  • How many times is a head coach allowed to fire his coordinator after a bad season?

Something I haven't seen mentioned much is that if Mack Brown does make it through this year, the dominant perception will be that 2013 will be his final year. That makes him a lame duck coach. Having a lame duck coach is terrible for recruiting and poisonous for the team in general.

If they would have gone for that TD, the score would likely have looked worse than the way it ended.

Patterson played it smart and was proven right.

Actually I thought kicking it on the goalline was a major mistake. TCU was running all over Texas. Score there and it was basically over. That decision gave Texas a chance to tie the game. I tworked out, but it was the wrong call.

I really disagree that the OL issues aren't being addressed. That situation was years in the making and it will take 1-2 two more years of recruiting and development to extricate ourselves from it.

There are no quick fixes there.

I think it could have gone either way. But it definitely worked out for TCU. They kicked, got the points, and played defense.
