Conference champs aren't "lost in the desert". There was only one year between the year Mack was hired and two conference championships in a row, the last SWC and the first Big 12. This idea that the program was dead just because we went 4-7 the year before he was hired is superficial and inaccurate. See the thread "Let's take a look back at the program that Mack inherited". Mack inherited more talent on that team than we have today.

Southwest Conference championships post Arkansas's exodus, were not worth very much. And, more importantly, Texas was not even the ghost of a national player between 1984 and when Mack restored the program.
