NCAA Hammers OSU With Bowl Ban

Ohio State was rocked to its core on Tuesday as The Columbus Dispatch reported that the football program will receive a one-year bowl ban for the 2012 season.

You want to punish the unversities and not the kids, take away their TV money for 2 or 3 years for all sports. This is a slap on the wrist otherwise. A one year bowl ban, please, that's stupid. 3 scholarships over 3 years, patethic. None of those things will hurt OSU in the long run. Take away $60M, now that would sting a lot and add in the level of probabtion that gets them kicked out of Coaches Poll, thus making them ineligible for the BCS title game would mean something.

Gene Smith should be laughing all the way to the bank on this one. Though I think he should be forced to resign and a show-clause slapped on him as well.

It's time to start ensuring that the coaches are the ones that are most affected by cheating because it's them that allow it to happen. There is not much the NCAA can do retro-actively, but there is plenty the NCAA can do to punish the universities to ensure to doesn't happen again.

  • 3 scholarships is a joke. Same as USC's punishment.

It's not even a deterrent compared to the competitive advantage gained.

Although, if you look at past similar situations, this is a more severe penalty than most, especially when it looks like schools like Auburn get off scot free for the Cam Newton thing. Miami is probably crapping its pants waiting for their turn.

I agree with you. The penalty is a joke. Instead of a deterrent, I think it's an incentive. Small price to pay for a competitive advantage.

  • Penalizing them a lot of money hurts the other athletes in non-rev sports. If you want to punish a football program, the best way to do it is with massive scholarship limitations. That way really only the football program feels the punishment, and the impact on competitiveness is a strong deterrent. 3 scholarships a year for 3 years isn't much of a punishment considering how often teams start the season under the limit anyway.

The post-season ban has the effect of denying them even a chance at a conference or national championship, which is somewhat effective.

I agree with you. It is a joke of a penalty and not incentive to stop cheating in the future. The only problem with taking away the TV money is that a lot of the non profit sports at OSU depend on that money to fund their sports. If that happened then I could see OSU eliminating other sports to keep funding the football team. A men's wrestler could lose their scholarship for something they never did.
