SIAP-Corey Coleman staying with Baylor

  • I haven't seen this piece of recruiting news officially posted on any UT recruiting Messageboards (other than ESPN's UT Site):

    Coleman staying with Baylor

Another dark-horse candidate for late attention from Texas has told HornsNation he's done with his recruiting process.
Four-star receiver Corey Coleman (Richardson, Texas/Pearce) told our William Wilkerson today he hasn't heard from Texas coaches lately and is sticking with his verbal commitment to Baylor.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect is ranked 17th among wideouts on ESPNU's rankings. Back in November, he told HornsNation that Texas receivers coach Darrell Wyatt had called him to say an offer was coming "really soon."

When receiver Thomas Johnson (Dallas/Skyline) decommitted last month, Texas coaches didn't turn their attention to Coleman. They've continued to recruit TCU commit Daje Johnson (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson) - even though he now insists he'll stay with the Horned Frogs - and remain in the race to sign No. 1 receiver Dorial Green-Beckham (Springfield, Mo./Hillcrest). 1/24/12

  • hmmmmm.....I just twitter searched Corey Coleman and according to ESPN & Cal's Rivals website, Corey Coleman is going to be taking an Official Visit to Cal this Thursday & Friday.

Is too late for the UT coaches to get Coleman into Austin for an OV on Saturday????!!!!

I'll take Cottrell, Santos, Daje, and DGB all over Coleman. I'm content with what the staff is doing right now. I like it.

Coleman > Daje UT needs playmaking WRs a lot more than an APB role that Johnathan Gray can fill.

If Daje signs with UT and plays on offense, I think he's likely to complement Gray similar to the way DJ complimented Fozzy.

If Daje can run routes and catch, he's going to be a great weapon for whatever team he signs with. . . not an every down weapon, but a guy with sub 4.4 speed can put a lot of pressure on a college defense and open up explosive plays.

Here is our WR core next year:

    Davis
    Shipley
    Goodwin
    Harris
    Hales
    Onyegbule
    Jones
    Johnson
    Sanders (potentially)
DGB (a fan can wish, right?)

After next year, we lose Hales and Goodwin, but we also lose DJ Monroe:

If you were an opposing DC, would you rather face:

    Davis
    Shipley
    Harris
    Onyegbule
    Jones
    Johnson
    Sanders (potentially)
DGB or hopefully a 2013 stud freshman

plus Coleman or the same WR above plus a specialty speed back that replaced DJ Monroe (and could potentially run some routes)?

That's the way I look at it.

  • Texas has not been in contact with Coleman. That's why we haven't updated him.

I'm really trying to understand the mindset of the super recruiting fans, so try not to take it the wrong way.

How do you know this? Didn't we say the same about guys like DeSean Hales, Greg Timmons, Darius White, etc? Who yawned when we took Colt McCoy, Kenny Vaccaro?

I'm not trying to downplay recruiting. I absolutely understand that recruiting matters. For those that don't, take a look at our 2009 class. What I don't understand is how anyone can project success or failure of these kids. I love looking at recruiting rankings from years past, and then see how everyone and the subsequent teams worked out. But for the life of me, I just can't connect the dots on incoming recruits and their ability to ball at this level.
