Ryan Tannehill's first NFL pass

  • In mini camp was an interception according to ESPN. I'm just saying...

  • As a Dolphins fan I hated the pick at #8, but I have to defend the Fins here.

Ryan Tannehill focal point on first day of Miami Dolphins minicamp

The first day of a three-day Miami Dolphins rookie minicamp is over.

There was noticeably more interest in this minicamp compared with the voluntary veteran minicamp that was held last week.

Of course, the media flooded the Dolphins’ training complex to get their first glimpse at Ryan Tannehill & Co.

    Some quick thoughts:

    1) Tannehill was calm, cool confident and in control. After throwing an interception on his first pass of 11-on-11, he rebounded with some confident throws. The interception hit the hands of former Michigan State wide receiver B.J. Cunningham as he streaked across the middle. The ball was snatched out of the air by cornerback Vincent Agnew, who had another noticeable pass breakup later in the day.

    2) Tannehill can throw the deep ball. Perhaps a sign of things to come in the passing game, Tannehill launched a beautiful deep ball to former Nevada wide receiver Rishard Matthews, who shook his defender on a hook-and-go route. The timing was seamless, and the play captured the approval of the assembled media, and coach Joe Philbin. Tannehill later found former UCF wide receiver A.J. Guyton on a deep pass to the left side as well.

    3) Dolphins second-round draft pick Jonathan Martin looks very much the part of a player contending for a starting job at offensive right tackle. Philbin talked about how he liked the way Martin bends his knees. Martin, who is wearing No. 71, is listed at 6-foot-5, 304 pounds.

    4) The University of Miami contingent of Olivier Vernon, Lamar Miller and Jacory Harris was very much in demand after practice for on-field interviews.

    5) We told you the story of Nick Mandich, son of the late Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich, who received an invitation to tryout during this weekend’s rookie minicamp. Mandich, who wore his father’s No. 88 as he did during a recent Dolphins’ pro day workout, caught a pass from Pat Devlin during an 11-on-11 drill.

Extra credit: The Dolphins announced prior to practice they signed 16 undrafted free agents. You can read about them here

  • Yeah, I was gonna post that the news reports indicated that the pass bounced off the receiver's hands, but papa beat me to it. Can't really blame the QB for that.

Half of G. Gilbert's picks were from receivers' hands. Everyone pointed the finger at him for the most part.

Yep and the criticism was he did not throw a catchable ball. I will be shocked if Tannehill ever does anything in the Pros. Unless of course the guy we watched at A&M was not really Tannehill. Decision making in the Pros is paramount. Too often the scouts get all caught up in the measurable things but the most important thing they ignore. Maybe a new coach can straighten him out...oh wait.

Must have been over the middle.

"Half" is an exaggeration, but in any event I have never suggested that GG should have been criticized for picks that were primarily the fault of his receivers.

  • Not sure why we're talking about an ex-aggy qb, but since we are:

It doesn't really matter what he does in practices. Last season proved he simply doesn't have what it takes to be a big-time QB. Dropped passes, wrong routes, whatever, yada yada yada.

I don't wish him ill, since as with aggy overall I'm now pretty apathetic to what happens to them. I just don't see him as the "answer" at the NFL level. He, might wind up on a CFL team, though, with Jerrod Johnson and Reggie McNeal as his WRs. Or he might be a WR (his best position in college) and one of the other former-saviors-of-aggy-footballdom-now-covered-in-bus-tire-marks might chuck him the rock.

Your avatar still creeps me out. One of those shows that truly was so stupid that it could actually be funny at times.

I can still hear that retarded chuckle. "Huh. Heh. Huh-heh. Heh." huh

I hope that wasn't a reference to the "We're the NRA" scene from "Ruthless People"...

Meh. I think he's OK as far as ags go. Unlike many of his peers, he's actually capable of engaging in logical conversation (even if he doesn't always choose to.) And he doesn't play the "look at me! look at me!" card by dumping on every thread over here.

Haha...I didn't even know it was him at first!

I am getting bored with him, though. I made a new one that it's about time for me to switch in.
