Rick Barnes-State of the Program (video)

  • Rick Barnes talks about the incoming freshmen, the carry-over players, and why they recruited this particular group. The emphasis was on developing team chemistry and a winning attitude, as well as versatility. Although he is not allowed to talk specifically about unsigned players, Coach Barnes makes a clear reference to a certain SF who is still in play.

  • He wants to play inside-out! He wants to play inside-out! He wants to play inside-out!

Still looking to add "a player that can just do it all." Hmm. I wonder who that could be.

Nice schedule with Georgetown, UNC, Michigan State, and UCLA on top of the Maui Invitational.

And if people needed to hear it (and apparently many have in the last couple of years) --

    Thanks for the post!

Rick Barnes always gives credit to the players or assistants...........never for himself. Yet he takes the blame when things are not going right. He must be a good guy to work for.........

You can really tell he is excited for next year already but man what a tough schedule!

  • The look on his face when he talks about the guys on campus and how they're working........the man is excited about next season.

  • Glad to hear about the change in rules where the coaching staff gets to work more with the incoming freshman over the summer. That will be big.

  • I really see Texas mirroring the 2005-06 team, or attempting to in 2012-13.

Kill me for suggesting it again, but more 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone, more inside out and dominating the glass type of team IMO.

  • Get out of the first weekend of the tournament and then we'll talk Rick.

  • Barnes showed what a good coach he is this year. Our team was abysmally short handed and young. It was the best job since his first year when we sucked at the beginning of the year and became quite formidable by the end of it. It is going to be fun to see what he does with a full component of capable players this year. Still young but big, strong and fast. If he can get them playing the D he likes look out, especially if he can find that player that can do it all. I wonder who that could be? Go get him Ricky from Hickory!

    sundancekid

  • Yeah, I could see that. Barnes would prefer man to man, but I don't see Ridley getting out to hedge on many ball screens.

I can tell you what they'll be working on in their summer workouts though...........man to man defense. And hopefully Wright can get Ridley in good enough shape to play man for an entire game.

    Couldn't agree more.

What's he gonna say? "Hey, next year will be a huge struggle too and if we're lucky we'll make the NCAA's only to be one and done - again"

Let's face it gentlemen - the Texas BB program is middle of the pack at best - a Top 30 bunch - maybe 40..

You will be proven quite wrong there next year. Unless there is some unforeseen academic complication, a lot more talent is coming in than is leaving, and the 5 remaining players from the 2011 recruiting class will be significantly improved across the board. Next year's team will be far better than what we saw in 2011-12.

  • I think Rick is going to have a really strong year next year with the versatility of this team.
He also towards the latter stages of this past season got a really good feel for the ebbs and flows of his team which I think will carry over.

If Texas isn't a +6.0 type rebound advantage team next season I would be surprised.

I want to say +7.5'ish, but that may be unrealistic because it's a young team with inexperienced bigs that will quickly have to learn the need for putting a body on the opponent instead of being able to just use God given talent to snatch rebounds as they did in HS.

  • BTW, I am hearing 2-3 zone and 1-3-1 talk for next year now. Time will tell.

A mix of man and zone would certainly fit this team/roster makeup.

Now if Texas were to get Devonta Pollard - a 1-3-1 zone would almost be a certainty in stretches IMO.

C'mon now... I want to write the guy off, just to not suffer any letdown, and you won't let me.

    Hope you're right.

Maybe we'll be good enough to win a 1st round game.

Maybe we can even beat a real powerhouse like Nevada.

If Texas is playing in the first round then that is not good as they will be playing in Dayton.

I've never understood this mindset as a Horn fan. Why bother following the team if you can't find reasons to be positive for the next season. It's not like Barnes has never been out of the first round. Hell, it happened the year before last. I'm not expecting anyone to be making Final Four plans, but there's no reason to be chalking anything up either way at this point. Carry on.
