  • Re-watched each video and a couple of things before I rank them (strictly off of the video):

    a) I don't know why anyone thinks Alex D La Torre is not a TAKE all the way. We must be watching different video b/c the clips I saw were sick. That guy is everywhere and he lays the wood. Color me impressed;

    b) Curtis Riser's film made me laugh b/c it was so awesome. He really looks like an immovable force in his video and he blocks until the very end;

    c) First block by Camrhon Hughes was amazing and Norman looks like a BEAST.

    My list:

    1. Caleb Bluiett
    2. Johnathan Gray
    3. Hassan Ridgeway
    4. Curtis Riser
    5. Camrhon Hughes
    6. Malcom Brown
    7. Caleb Jones
    8. Alex Norman
    9. Alex De La Torre
    10. Kennedy Estelle
    11. Peter Jinkens
    12. Orlando Thomas
    13. Thomas Johnson - but who is the guy that runs him down at 0.51?
    14. Bryson Echols
    15. Connor Brewer
    16. Tim Cole
    17. Paul Boyette

interesting take on BLUITT, I like this kid, Competitor...pitcher, lb, te, de, basketball.....2 yrs in a Wylie program makes him look freaky big......i say 260 to 280lbs , this kid body structure reminds me of a highly recruited player named REDDING....WHO was thick, fast athletic, played his last year around 230lbs, geez, now Redding is a DT,

wonder whats the chances of him growing another 1 1/2 inches and put on another 70lbs and become the all world OT we are looking for.....

Lets hope Norman goes the way of the Achos as far as UT success...., I loved the fact he lost 50lbs ....shows me dedication..and will power..., Imagine if he does blow up and is better than Malcom Brown, and Malcom is NFL bound..... thats one hell of a quick Powerful , slashing DLINE

Ridgeways motor, and frame...??? makes me think DT... NORMAN, Ridgeway and Malcom what if they all become stars....,

we need more DE's fast.....almost panic button thinking Ridgeway and Bluitt metamorphizes under Wylie and start growing and filling out......, WE need to go grab that kid that runs the 50 split quarter , fast....!!!!

good post rwc , great take....

  • I think this class is going to be very balanced judging from everyone's prognostications.

Thomas Johnson played at 75-80% in those clips, if not less. His badly sprained ankle took his juice away last season.

Really? He's one of the 2-3 that are a bit of a head scratcher for me.

I prefer linebackers that aren't scared to take on blocks, are always in the right hole, and flat out knock the sh*t out of you. That kid is a striker. Watch his video again. I think some people are wowed by guys that run sideline to sideline even though they've missed their assignment half the time and have to make up for it. When you're where you're supposed to be, you don't have to chase a lot of people.

I think that is a solid point when talking about playing the linebacker position.

  • It is tough to rank the prospects in the 2011 class since it is so well balanced and full of high end talent. I am basing my list more on who I see making the largest impact during their UT career rather than on who I think is the most talented prospect when they first step on campus...

    1. Connor Brewer - I think Brewer is the ideal QB to play in the Harsinwhite system. The accuracy, intangibles, ability to throw on the run, and quick release he displays leads me to believe that he will be a Heisman Trophy caliber player while at Texas.
    2. Malcolm Brown - Brown's agility, strength, and pad level are off the charts. This kid could become one of the best DL prospects in the Mack Brown era.
    3. Johnathan Gray - There is no doubt that Gray is the most talented player in this class with his speed, vision, and work ethic, however the injury history is a bit troubling. If Gray can stay healthy (which I think he will), there is no doubt that he will be an exceptional RB. Splitting carries with Malcom Brown will create an incredible rushing attack but will limit his individual production a little during his time at UT.
    4. Cayleb Jones - I think Jones' luster has unfairly dulled a little after his injury riddled season last year. He is unfairly knocked for his speed which is easily more than adequate to dominate at the collegiate level. Jones has elite hands and excellent body control. He can effortlessly elevate in traffic and make difficult catches look easy. I think with proper motivation and a little maturation, Jones can end up having a Roy W. type of career.
    5. Curtis Riser - Riser and Flowers at Guard together is downright terrifying. Riser appears to be a dominate blocker with excellent hands, impressive strength, and a little bit of a mean streak. Although he is coming off of an injury, early returns have been extremely positive. There is no reason that Riser should not be a future 3 year starter and significant contributor at Texas.
    6. Camrhon Hughes - Hughes has the frame and athletic ability to be a standout at either tackle position. Although Estelle is more highly thought of, I think Hughes has the potential to be a better college tackle.

Gotta run for now..I will edit/finish later.

  • I think it's easy for people to look at some of these lists and see a kid we like at or near the bottom and feel like, hey, this guy is dissing this player, look how low he's got him ranked. And I'm thinking there may be people who know some of these players, or may live in their communities, that may get irritated by some aspects of this. But as I was watching the vids and trying to rank them, what I came away impressed with was how hard it was -- and even with the guys I had ranked lower than others, I'm still very high on all of them. To me, every one of them is a take, no regrets or second thoughts. So this was like picking all-time favorite songs, and ranking them 1 through 25. Even No. 25 is a song I'd never turn off if it came up on the radio or an IPod. These guys are players, from 1 through 17, and I'm looking forward to watching all of them kick ass for the good guys. Give me a Peat and an Agholor and a Kendall Sanders -- I'd swear that kid wants nothing more than for Mack to say "come on down" -- and I'd pit this class up against anybody's.

Well said, ET. I haven't had time to watch all of them and rank them, but I thought the same thing when I was watching the few I got through. So tough to rank them all. A few jump off the screen as impressive videos, but some of the others are just solid, impressive highlights.

reminds me of a comment an NFL coach said about Lamar Lathon(off the charts physically). "he gets to the wrong place, but he gets there quickly."

    very good post btw echeese.

I think what is interesting about the LB part of the discussion is what should the balance be?

If one is a 4-3 defense, can you have one or two LB's that are like what you described and then one guy that is what Beast512 described. Or is it 2 like Beast512 described and one that is more of a street baller so to speak.

One thing I believe, a team can't have three LB's that are just athletes running around on the field and have a sound unit. I think there has to be a mix, but what exactly is the mix?

  • In regards to DLT, I think people (including myself) aren't so hot on him because he lacks BOTH size and speed. Yah, he looks good against high school competition. Now project a 230 lb 4.8 linebacker defending the spread against teams like Oklahoma and teams that pound the rock like K State (our linebackers were terrible in that game). Sorry, I just don't see it.

This list will look counter-intuitive at some level, but it's how I see the top 7 long term.

    1. Malcom Brown 2. Johnathan Gray 3. Curtis Riser 4. Hassan Ridgeway 5. Kennedy Estelle 6. Orlando Thomas 7. Camrhon Hughes

I know that leaves out guys like Brewer, Cayleb Jones and Thomas Johnson. I also think guys like Caleb Blueitt and Bryson Echols may be better than considered by some.

Watched all highlight and agree pretty much totaly with this except Estelle. He would be around 7 or 8. Brewer would be right behind him. Most suprised with Riser. He is deffinetly a step or two better than Estelle at this point.

    Man I love Riser.

I saw DeSoto play last year and he's got the right frame of mind for OL not to mention really good feet for big man.

On Rivals, they said he ran a 4.62 the other day? And his height is lower, due to a messed up event. I've watched him play and I'll tell you, he's bigger than Cole and Jenkins in height.

I'll take the coach's son who can move side to side and has shown he can make plays at a high level of competition any day.
