Lufkin ISD Head Coach John Outlaw died this morning of a heart attack. I saw Carrington Byndom's tweet this morning and KETK is reporting it as well. Helluva coach.

That is quite a shock this morning. The nemisis for both of my favorite HSchools, Longview and The Woodlands. He was a great coach and prayers are out for the family.

One of the salesman I work with lives in Lufkin and his wife works at the HS. Said they are in shock down there.
He and his teams gave my Lobos fits for many years. Great coach and a really good man.

Before coach Outlaw went to Sherman and then onto Lufkin, he won several state championships at Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

He was a year younger than me. Kinda makes you think about things. I'm sure his family, team and community are reeling right now.

Drove up to Martinsville to spend the day with my grandmother this morning, she is in her mid-90's.
The drive to Martinsville from Houston is right up 59 north.
The drive today was a tough one.
Having been to Lufkin High so many times over the years, twice this year, it was tough to look right at Lufkin High and Abe Martin Stadium on the loop this AM.
Coach Outlaw was always awesome to me, every trip through. Always a hand shake and a look in the eye asking how I was doing.
This year, during the season, Coach Outlaw, his DC and good friend Coach Quick and I sat in Coach Quick's office and talked realignment, Lufkin young kids (he was excited about an 8th grade class he said could end up being their best ever), Longview games and some East Texas ball.
I don't claim to know as much as others about Lufkin from 1995 to 2011, but from my outside view, Coach Outlaw was the perfect coach for the Panthers and had the respect of everyone I came in contact with close to the program. I always had the feeling that he was very well respected by his players, help mold them, and was always respected by the coaches that took the field across from his Lufkin teams.
Thoughts and prayers to the Outlaw family, the Lufkin staff and all of the people and players that were lucky enough to get to know Coach Outlaw.
A sad day in the Piney Woods.
