Many say A&M leaving will kill the Big 12. Others blame Texas for launching the Longhorn Network as killing the Big 12. But wasn't the Big 12 Conference destined for certain death in the next 4 or 5 years regardless of either of the two-referenced events happening? Wasn't ESPN going to make sure that there would only be 4 conferences with 16 teams each? And weren't the four 16-team conferences going to be the SEC, the Pac 10, the Big 10 and the ACC?
It is apparent that ESPN wants full control over college football, does not want a play-off system with the current conference configuration and will ultimately have a 4 team play-off consisting of the winners of each of the 4 16-team conferences, either within the NCAA or in a newly formed league.
A&M saw this coming and acted accordingly and appropriately. Texas will obviously land in a good place. The last team(s) to jump may have nowhere to go, so they better start hopping. Some of the big dogs will keep their TV deals when they join one of these conferences (i.e. ND and Texas)..., and there's nothing wrong with that.
Any attempt to salvage the Big 12 will be an exercise in futility. Blaming A&M, Texas or any other school for the break-up of the Big 12 is misplaced; sort of like trying to lasso the sun to prevent it from setting.

Yes, but ESPN also told the Big 12 they would not try to seek a lower rate for the 10 team conference. Basically guaranteeing the current contract money being split 10 ways instead of 12.
ESPN basically owns the bowls, and they do not want that to change any time soon. 4 mega-conferences would essentially start the way to a playoff.
RIP BIG XII CONFERENCE
