Quincy Russell: 100-percent Texas (Story)

My intent is not to knock Jackson's game but 6 foot DT's aren't "no brainer" 5 stars. He's a better player than Russell right now but will Jackson's quickness translate at the college level? IDK, mebbe, mebbe not. Jackson is big for his position in HS so his size isn't a disadvantage yet. Jackson is going to have to change his body composition some and pack a lot of muscle on his frame while being relatively lean most likely to maximize quickness. Trying' to think of the last elite DT that was below 290lbs. John Randle was a smaller interior guy but he was 205lbs as a Fr in college. He and Jackson have different bodies.

Valid points...however, Sam Acho has proven that you can get a lot of snaps out of a guy at the 1 gap position who are far under 265.

  • Jeff or Gerry:

    1. If Russell is a hard worker and athletic freak...why still so raw? Coaching?

    2. What does Jackson currently weigh?

    1. I think it's more so the light going off for Quincy in late spring/early summer. You can tell he's worked his butt off because he doesn't look like the same kid now that he did last year IMO. I think too the fact that he plays 3A ball - he's always going to be the biggest guy on the field so he doesn't really have to use leverage and things like that. He's getting by solely on athletic ability IMO right now.

    2. When I was there in the spring he was between 285 and 290 and was a shade about 6-1.5.

  • As far as being "raw", I think you also have the multiple sport issue with him. He's gone from football straight into basketball. As Jeff and I talked over dinner last night (El Sol y La Luna), anytime a player with Quincy's athleticism starts taking a sport seriously at a young age (or as Jeff put it, the light goes on), you are talking about a guy who could truly end up maximizing his talent. That means he's already off to a better start about understanding the seriousness and sacrifice it takes to be great than some ever get to in that regard.
