Quiet Confidence -- Why David Ash is the QB Texas needed

David Ash won't give any rah-rah speeches, but his incredibly strong work ethic and desire to get better has turned him into the leader the Texas Longhorn offense needed.

Fantastic! Very well written. Ash has that "it" factor that is different than most. He's definitely not a cocky guy, but he's really down to earth. I love to hear his responses to the media on topics. He's both sarcastic, and as you said "self critical". Even when credit is due to him, he seems to pass it on to someone else.

We are lucky to have this guy to right the ship at QB. He should be the top rated QB in the Big 12 next year with more senior leadership moving on (Klein, Smith, Jones, Doege)

  • Terrific write up, Jeff. Thanks. This makes me very comfortable with Ash going forward and really elevates my respect for him. Not sure who will follow him.

  • Going into the season, the concensus seemed to be that if Ash had a 2-1 TD-interception ratio, the offense would be fine. The fact that the ratio is better than 3-1 this late in the season is a remarkable accomplishment.

  • Agree with the other posters.....outstanding story. Ash is one of my favorites because there is no BS with him. We tend to have too much (BS) around the program at times and Ash for me is a breath of fresh air.

  • Good piece Jeff! I just printed it off to let my 6th grader read about the value of hard work, studying and sports. He sometimes wants to slack on the study part, but as your article shows, film study is just as important as physical effort.

  • Feels good to know we have a really good QB for the next 2 years.

  • 2011 and 2012 are night and day when it comes to Ash. I understood the frustrations of all of us for the bad decision making last year. But, I thought even then it was ridiculous to write him off considering he had his prom just months earlier. It was the right decision to bench him vs. K-State and start Case in the A&M game. But a poor Baylor defense exposed Case by jumping the short routes because his deep ball was non-existent. Even though Case hadn't thrown any picks going into Baylor, he threw a lot of passes that were begging to be intercepted. The odds caught up to him in a big way.

So, it's good that Ash caught up to him and surpassed him in the off season because he had more ability to make more of the throws than Case.

  • Great write-up! I think the Case/Ash situation is way over played; hats off to the two players who have handled the event with maturity and class, when others seem to be the exact opposite. I really think this young team has a chance to be great, but time will tell.

I was very critical on McCoy last year, but I am definitely happy that he is our backup now. The QB position this year validates what we were trying to accomplish... having two capable kids to come in and do what it takes to win football games.

I especially love how Ash didn't let the benching in the KU game get in his head. He came out and played better and hasn't made any excuses.

Agreed. This kid goes from mowing neighbors' lawns in high school to appearing in front of 110,000 football fanatics in about a year; expecting him to be Superman. Give him a break. As an aside, Belton is a local sports powerhouse and it's no surprise that he and Smythe would come from it. Great job, David!

  • Thanks for the kind words guys.
