Question for board members

  • What do feel is reasonable expectations for the following? You certainly do not have to answer all if you only want to comment on only one or two. Also you may want to give a time period of several years. For example- Football a ten or more win season 7 out of 10 seasons or what ever time frame you want. I think it would be interesting just to see what each of us has as expectations.
    1. Football
    2. Men's basketball
    3. Baseball
    4, Lady's basketball
    5. Lady's softball

    My expectations might be a little high but here goes:

    1. Football - Minimum, 10 wins every year and competing for Big 12 or National Championship.
    2. Mens Basketball - NCAA tourney every year, no higher than a 8 seed.
    3. Mens Baseball - Super Regionals every year if not Omaha.
    4. Womens Basketball - NCAA tourney every year.
    5. Womens Softball - NCAA tourney every year.

    I'm not nearly as knowledgeable about our women's sports so please correct me if those expecations are unreasonable.

    They strike me as what many of us want except some years I would expect our men's team to do better than an 8th seed but I am thinking seeding in the first round of the tournament and you might be thinking overall.

  • I think our goal should always be to win a championship. However, if your goal is the highest possible achievement, we have to understand that it is a rare accomplishment, even for the very best teams. We have to get over the notion that every season that doesn't end in a championship is a failure.

    If the upcoming football season produces 10 or 11 wins, it will likely not end in a championship. However, it would be, IMO, highly successful.

  • 1. Football -
    top 25 every year. This should be a given even in the down years.
    Competitive for conference championships 4 out of every 5 years with minimum of 1 every 5, but expectation of 2 every 5 with the current conference make up.
    National Championship contenders with realistic chance at least 1 every 5 with a NC once every 10-15 years.

    All others entertain me, but I really don't have any expectation. The better they do, great. If they don't do well in a given year, no big deal. Although, basketball is starting to maybe slip into the "care" category.

  • 1. top 3 in conference every year, winning the conference at least 25% of the time. If we are at the top of the conference, we are more than likely playing for the NC.
    2. top 3 in conference every year, winning the conference every 6-7 years. Sweet sixteen every three years. Final Four every 7-8 years. Always in the dance.
    3. top 2 in conference 75%. World Series every three years. Super 67%. dance, always
    4. Top 3 in conference (after 2 years) every year. win conference 20%. dance always
    5. dance always, don't know enough about the competition.

    Pretty much agree w. the above, except at least once very 2 years we should finish ranked high enough to win the conference and/or play in a BCS bowl (or equivalent post-season game under the new playoff system).

    Not sure about the 10 wins. We've been told by Bellmont Hall to be grateful for 10 wins (and to keep our checks coming), but there sure seem to have been a lot of seasons under Mack where 10 wins weren't enough to either win the conference or get into the BCS.

    2. Men's basketball- the sweet 16.
    3. Baseball- at least a regional appearance.
    4, Lady's basketball- i don't care and never will.

  • A minimum of 11 wins a year in football with some strong OOC games, not this crap Mack & Deloss schedule each year. Baseball wise we should be in the college world Series virtually every year, too much history and tradition for us not to go and be a factor once we get there, unlike last year. I would like to see us be a major player in mens BB but after having season tickets for 15 years I dropped them and have few expectations.

    I'm afraid this is just an example of how impossibly high fans place the bar for competition. By my count, this year is the 66th CWS. Texas has more appearances (34) than any other school, with the next closest being Miami's 23 appearances. So, although Texas has been to more CWS than anyone else, we still only have been to just over half of them. Yet, you suggest we should go every year. History, which you suggest supports your position, actually supports Texas going to the CWS about every other year. Nobody has the slightest chance of going "virtually every year."
