Question For Golfers on Hookem

  • I'm a weekend hacker looking to buy a new set of clubs. I am currently using a mismatched set that was handed down. I shoot in the 90's but still love to play, and am planning on taking some lessons this fall. I would like to get the board's opinion on what you think is the most forgiving set of clubs or what set you think is best for my level of play? Also, any input or suggestions on best places or websites to purchase from would be appreciated. I don't think I am willing to invest in a custom set right now. I would like to spend $500 or less and am open to buying a used set. Thanks in advance.

  • I've had a set of used Ping i3's for about 10 yrs and they have been great. I shoot in the mid-80's.

Go to a golf store and try out different clubs to get a feel of what fits your style.

If its forgiving clubs you want that's affordable, I'd go with adams golf, or some of the cheaper calways. Both are easy to hit and you should be able to find a set for 500. I'm on my phone at work now but I can tell u more when I get home.

Pings are great clubs but they're pretty expensive atleast the good ones are. Definitely agree with your second point though. You really just have to try different ones out to make sure they feel right before buying clubs.

  • You need to get fit for your clubs. Most places will only charge a small fee for this if you buy the clubs through them. You also may want to wait until you take lessons before buying a new set. You can ask the pro for recommendations based on your swing. I really think it comes down to golfer preference as all of the major brands have quality products. I prefer Ping and like the fact they still do some of their assembly and manufacturing in the good ol' USA.

You can get a used set of Pings for a reasonable price and with the color coding system have some degree of fit to you.

Golf Digest has some free club ratings on their website which is broken down into different categories of skill level, which might be helpful. My personal opinion is that any of the major brands are really really good clubs so it comes down to preference. I'd go to golfsmith, golf galaxy, etc and hit a number of irons that are in your price range and made for your skill level. Then choose the clubs that look and feel the best. I am partial to Mizuno but I am not sure how their game improvement clubs compare.......When the time is right do not underestimate the benefits of getting custom fit for a set. Almost all major brands do not charge for making factory modifications to length, lie angle, shaft flex and grip size

  • Get a set of OVERSIZED irons sometimes called "cavity backed" because all the weight is around the edges. They are slightly bigger but have a bigger sweet spot than most blades. Some have more weight underneath if you need more loft.

If you don't care to spend a lot of money you can buy a knock off pair of clubs for much cheaper than a name brand, but it is up to you.

  • Thanks for everyone's input. If I buy a used set, can I still get them fitted or can u only do that with a new set?

  • If you have the time and patience go to ebay and pick out the type of club or a few types of club that you would be ok with getting and put them on your watch list. Wait till there is 30 seconds left on the item and bid till you win one of them. The ones that end late at night are the ones that you can get a steal on.

As far as club goes the Mizuno JPX-800 is prob the best club you can get in the $500 range and you can get them for less than that if you have the time and patience to play the bidding game.

  • I would take a long hard look at Maltby's. He makes his own clubs that are usually better suited for being easier to hit than the big boys in the industry but for a good price. Go to golfworks.com and check out the MPF Club Ranking Chart on the right hand side of the page under the Maltby Playability column. He uses all the scientific data you can measure on a club and adds it all up to see which clubs are the "easiest" to hit. It should give you a good idea of which clubs to go try because you want a club that won't work against you, golf is hard enough as it is.

At the end of the day, just because a club is easier to hit than another doesn't mean it is best for you, golf is still a feel game. I would research on there and get a working list of clubs that are easy to hit and go try them out. Then pick which one works best with your swing.

Also, getting a custom fitting is always a great idea. Most places will do it free if you buy from them. All this will do is get you into the best shaft for your swing, adjust your lie and maybe even shorten or lengthen your club. All golfers need to do this to get the equipment adjusted to their specific swing. Usually a custom fitting is around $100 if you do it without buying the clubs. If you get fitted and want the Maltby's you can order your new clubs online or on the phone with the exact specifications that the fitting said you needed. They are easy to work with at golfworks and even offer returns if you order one club and don't like it.

    Hope that helps.

I attached an image of one of my irons to prove they look nice as well. They usually come with red and black paint but I did my own paint fill job. Can't be having my clubs painted like tech.

  • Titleist AP1 used at golfsmith. Got a set there for $299 2 weeks ago. Very forgiving club plus they look really nice. highly recommend them.

  • Absolutely get fitted BEFORE you purchase anything. No point in buying new clubs if you aren't going to get fitted.

Ya if your buying used than yes 500 bucks can get you places, just not if you're buying new pings. I love pings but just me nothing tops the new burners in my bag right now.

  • I am in the same boat. Recently went to Golfsmith and hit several different clubs. The Calloway Diablo was the easiest to hit. Brand new set for $399....

  • Pings are good. I have a set of Callaway X 20s that I love. That would be a good used set

  • Titliest hands down make the best performing irons in the game. If you go the Titliest route I would say go with the AP1 if you are a 18 or higher handicap.

    Troon74

  • You can have my Hogan Apex forged irons for $400 plus shipping.

I have Titleist AP2s but they're out of the price range you're looking at.

Some would argue for Mizuno as the best iron, but I've never quite gotten them.

  • most good golf stores have knowledgeable sales people who will sell you what you want.
    http://www.golfsmith.com/
Is where I got mine. If you are a country club member the pro often will get you good clubs at the same price as golfsmith or other outlet stores. I can not stress too much on having some place where they let you hit some, check your swing speed and actually get you a good fit. I cheat in that I love hybrids and that got me from the upper 90s to the mid 80s when I got really good ones.
