Whew I am really glad to read this. Have been less than sold on CB or maybe just overly gun-shy after our recent history. Would solve a lot of problems to know we have a guy who will be competent or better in 2 years. Then if Ash works it out that is icing on the cake, but even if he doesn't, he can hopefully bus drive to a 9 win season and then make way.

I wasn't completely sold on him either. I think the comments today on Brewer is very good news.

    And Estelle v Edwards.

    That's worth an upvote.

I thought Peat had Taylor Bible senior highlights. I lost a lot of interest in him when I saw his latest film. He was probably playing against inferior competition in AZ as well.

I'm beginning to think Riser is going to surprise some people next fall.

    GetHooked--

I hope we can get back redshirting offensive linemen next year. I think bringing in Donald Hawkins and redshirting sedrick flowers at the last moment will help in that regards. Riser needs to redshirt to finish that transition

  • Also I believe Camrhon Hughes coming in early will help both him and Kennedy Estelle redshirt. Hughes needs to add weight but his enrollment early will put Estelle behind him on scheme, development, and weight disposition. We lucked into redshirting Flowers and Greenlea and I never mind a true frosh Oline like Cochran to come in to start. If they don't start, redshirt them. Only backup tackles should play if they will be needed to start as sophomores. Estelle may or may not fall under that category. I hope he redshirts

Dave, what was it about Brewer that made you less than exited?? I could not tell that much from a lot of his games as the competition was less than stellar...However, his elite 11 and other all star appearances were solid...No one can know how well he will process his reads at the college level..If that was the case, we would not have missed so badly on Gilbert...Brewer looks like he has more tools and is better prepared but that is not a guarantee it translates to the field...Appeciate your thoughts...

Bobby has indicated that he would be shocked to see Riser & Estelle redshirt and he isn't a fan of redshirting players that are as college ready as these guys. We really don't have the depth for that luxury yet. Assuming our starting tackles are Cochran & Hawkins, the only other tackle we have will be Kelley since Hopkins should be moving back inside. That means Estelle isn't getting a redshirt. The interior line consists of some combination of Hopkins, Espinosa, Walters, & Flowers. Since Riser is probably already better than any of the players behind those 4, he doesn't get a redshirt either. All of that being said, I believe our starting 5 will be much better than this year due to increased experience, better personnel in the right positions (no Guards playing tackle) , better teamwork amongst the OL since we only lose 1 player, and the additional year with Wylie. Our depth with these two freshman combined with whomever gets bumped out of a starting role between the four interior players will be improved too. It will be very interesting to see which players emerge in the interior during the spring. The only sure fire starter is Walters IMHO.

  • Neither Riser or Estelle needs a redshirt. Both have the talent to be gone in 3 years.

I don't know that I'd be shocked, but I'd certainly be surprised. I think both will be in the 2-deep next year. Definitely Riser, probably Estelle. And if that's the case, then they need to play.

  • Estelle will probably be behind Cochran, hawkins, Kelley and Greenlea. Why should he play? I miss the days of guys like blalock redshirting then starting for 4 years at tackle. Estelle would be perfect for that if he could beat out Cochran or Hawkins

Don't see Estelle realistically staying behind Greenlea, who I think will eventually move inside. And probably not Cochran and Kelley long term. I like Cochran a lot. But I think Estelle could ultimately be better and he's only a year behind.

Where is Riser going to play?

The top 4 rotational players on the interior are returning. Hopkins, Flowers, Walters, and Espinosa were similarly ranked players coming out of HS, and will have had 2 years with Wylie before Riser gets on campus. Now I can understand if one of those guys gets hurt, but Riser is not going to have much time after those 4.

why the concern over ranking? only ranking that count is Texas coaching staff

There are still staff members at Texas that were there when we ranked GG over Luck. They are college coaches. Not prophets.

I think you are going to see a lot of rotating on the offensive line in 2012. I could see Riser & Estelle get 20-25% of the offensive snaps next year and not in just garbage time.

Why do you see Greanlea going inside? Is he too slow of foot after his injury to stay at tackle? His build looks like he's more suited for a tackle imo. Or, would he be a perrenial backup at tackle and inside will get him on the field? I had some high hopes for this kid, especially following a redshirt year.

    Bullrush

  • Depth, Mack wants to be able to rotate the whole offensive line as a unit next year. And outside of Flowers, Walters, and Hopkins not sure anyone else will be better at guard. Also it isn't inconceivable Hopkins doesn't beat someone out at T or Espinosa at C.

I didn't mean to infer that I didn't think he'd be good. I definitely think he has talent. I just wasn't 100% sold after watching his video. I never saw much if any of the elite 11. The good reviews coming out of the UA practices makes me more of a believer.

Funny, I was completely sold after seeing his video. Slight on the height, but the mechanics, footwork, and quick-release were all beautiful. Immediately made me think of Drew Brees. Once he gets a little more mature physically he's got potential to rip up the college scene.

I agree with you on Riser also. Why rush these guys into things and waste a year of eligibility? We were snakebite playing Snow, Huey and Allen all early. Those guys besides Allen all would have looked different with another year.

I'm tired of playing true freshman at offensive line and quarterback

I wouldn't right either Greenlae or Porter out of the two deep at this point. Porter was a national top 100 recruit coming out of high school. He may not have the mobility that Harsin wants out of his interior linemen; but he was only a sophomore. A Wisconsin type big lineman. Greenlae is just now getting healthy after his ACL repair. Another big kid. I know that Bobby and Gerry don't like him; but other people do. I could easily see him backing up right tackle for a year when he is fully healthy and has a year to work with Wylie.

My guess is that Kennedy will play. He probably is good enough that he won't be here for more than four years. Riser probably is a different story. Interior linemen just aren't a hot commodity in the NFL draft. It he isn't a starter or the first or second in the two deep at the three interior line slots; he should red-shirt and give us four great years. We were lucky with both Hopkins and Flowers. Injuries gave us their red-shirt year. We need to quit wasting red-shirts on linemen who are really needed.
