  • I've been following this website for less than a year, so I'm very curious about one point. It seems that every two or three years Texas loses several NFL-caliber players from the secondary, and we basically have to start from scratch with a group of replacements that are raw, untested, and wet-behind-the-ears.
The newspapers wail about our weak secondary, and the Longhorn Nation holds its collective breath game after game as our rookie secondary faces spread offense after spread offense.

Yet we manage to survive as those replacements grow quickly into the position and develop until yet another group of future NFL players.

So is the level of worry THIS year, about THESE incoming secondary replacements, any different from previous years? Or is it just that these players represent the unknown right now, just like previous years.

Just my opinion, it's this year we don't have a stopper - we usually have at least one guy returning that has Sunday play in his future.

Also, Gideon has been vilified so much that as our leader out there, people are gnashing teeth and wringing hands.

My guy said it, others have reported and Texas Sports Info confirmed it.

and the roster on the university site quadruple confirms it.

  • We lost 3 NFL CB's in one season. I'm not sure that's ever happened before - probably not. The safety play last year was poor to say the least, yet those are the only returning starters in the lineup. Neither Gideon nor Scott have the foot speed to play free safety, however, one of them will be manning the position it seems. That's a big weakness, as is safety speed in general. And breaking in 3 new starting corners at the same time? It's going to be tough unless our pass rush is truly amazing or the new CB's are outstanding and surpass all expectations.

We have good reports on some of the young players this off-season, but nobody knows how well they'll perform in actual games until... the actual games. Next year, the secondary may very well be the best in the nation, but this year it's going to have growing pains... most likely.

  • blackdog1 remains the most terrifying poster on the Internet. I hope he's a sock, rather than there actually being someone out there who writes like that.

The info on the QB spot isn't surprising and will be a 4-6 week long brouhaha at a minimum. Can't say the DB stuff is a stunner either, goes with youth.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.
