Texas coach Mack Brown opened Longhorns' practice on Friday and Hookem.com was there. Here's a position-by-position look at the Horns.

  • What stands out from reading this is how well the 2 JUCOs have been playing. So glad that we recruited them. Something concerning is the kicking game. That can really ruin a season.

  • 7 drops for Onyegbule!? I'm sure Wyatt wasn't too happy about that. nono

  • What's the story with PK? Is this going to be a problem in the future? We have been spoiled of late.

I agree with you on Hawkins and Moore. I believe they'll both be key contributors in the trenches.

The kicking game should be fine once kicker Nick Jordan and punter Nick Rose arrive and get to work with the team.

Here's a video of Nick Jordan

  • Don't we have 2 addl kickers coming to campus in June? Surely one of them can kick.

  • - Edmond made one play as a pass rusher that I recall vividly. He bull-rushed Espinosa on a blitz and basically pushed Espinosa two yards deep into the backfield.
    ===========================
Espy is gonna be a liability. I keep saying Flowers to guard and Walters to Center. Can't have the nose guard eating up the Center on every play.

Bobby, do you think that Brewer has any chance of passing up Case on the depth chart by the first game?

Fun practice in stadium today in front of coaches and fans. Already excited for the encore tomorrow. After tomorrow we're 1/3 done w/spring!

    =============================
Sounds to me like we're working out some kinks in team chemistry. It'll come around.

Doesn't really sound like Flowers had the best of days. Hopefully it was an anomaly because I agree with you about Dom.

  • I really hope the kicking game is fixed. We have had a pretty decent run with respect to field goals and would hate to be in a close game and be confident about the kicking game

    Slobbertooth

  • Espinosa had a tough day although Moore and Edmond are going to embarrass a lot of people this year based on what I saw today. Hopefully, it is just a matter of getting stronger. I would like to have seen what Porter could do against the 1's.

I agree. Walters or Hopkins need to be moved to Center and Sed Flowers to OG. Sounds like much of the same from last year as it relates to Espinosa. He's seems to be getting manhandled out there.

    A chance? Yes.

Likely? I didn't see that today but Brewer is still getting a grasp of the O.

I don't feel that way at all. Flowers played fairly well generally. He was just beaten badly one-on-one by Moore in one instance.

Flowers made a really nice lead block on a pitch to Hills off of a fake jet sweep.

Good to hear. Just seemed like he was mentioned quite a bit as being beaten in the live thread. I'm probably imagining things.

You feel like Wilson and Reed will be ready to play meaningful snaps this year, unlike last year?

    WildBill71

  • I don't get too high or low because of practice reports but there wasn't a whole of warm and fuzzies in there.

Moore is going tI beat any lineman on the schedule one-on-one.

    I don't think they'll have a choice. I like where Reed's body is headed.

Wilson still just has the outside rush move and the bull rush. He needs to develop more moves with his hands or he's always going to be a one-trick pony I'm afraid.

    Patience. It's very early yet.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

  • Just realized I neglected to mention tight ends in the article.

Barrett Matthews ran with the 1s all day long because they motioned in Miles Onyegbule in those sets.

DJ Grant and Darius Terrell ran with the 2s.

MJ McFarland was in and out of the mix with the 2s, when Grant moved up to first team.

DJ Grant had the best day of the tight ends IMO.

The offense looked disjointed. Did not look good IMO.

Brandon Moore should give every Texas fan the warm fuzzies. He's more physically gifted than Kheeston Randall. He's more of a nose than Kheeston was, and may not have the stamina of Kheeston however.

Steve Edmond, Quandre Diggs, Jaxon Shipley and Kenny Vacarro are as legit as they come.

And Mike Davis appears back on track. Solid practice from Davis. I can see why our sources said he had truly re-engaged with the program.

  • Flowers got the better of Moore on one pass rush during 0ne-on-ones. I thought he was pretty good. I also thought Porter performed better than Espinosa in pass rush drills. Espinosa totally whiffed the first time he faced Dorsey. Porter held his own.

  • Get hooked,
I saw Edmunds do that as well. When he times his blitz right, he can push the pocket just like a DT. It just doesn't look like a body with that shape should be able to move that well, but he's really quick and agile.
