    We have met 11 times this year in athletic competition. Current standings: tu: 10 wins A&M: 1 win in women's soccer...

    Not a fitting end in my book.. Byrne/Bowtie have been pissing in our cheerios and telling us it tastes good for far too long. And it doesn't get any easier next year..

    Loftin has been critical in our rebranding/marketing/increased exposure. Critical in SEC move, getting out of Texas' shadow. Very open and approachable as a president, will meet with anyone and is very congenial

    Byrne, otoh, is an ass. He was anti-SEC from the beginning, and pisses away money on non-revenue sports to win championships and earn substantial contract bonuses for himself. and he leaves angry voicemails.

  • They will probably fire Byrne after the reality of a year or two in the SEC smacks them in the face. Then sometime later they will realize that he was their best AD in decades considering his turnaround of their women's programs and some of the men's teams. They are still aggy, but he actually got them going in the right direction and I think Dollar Bill knows that the move to the SEC will be their downfall. Poor aggy.

    As an aside, and sorry if this has already been discussed, but during the game last night I heard the crowd chanting "texas aggie" over and over again. WTF is a texas aggie?

  • I've bit my tongue on the Aggie to the SEC thing but to my Aggie bretheren, please remember there is a reason the SEC invited you.

    There are three types of programs in Major College Football.
    1) Elite - USC, Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc. (these programs have the talent and resources to play a role in the National Championship race on a consistent basis)
    2) Quality- Michigan State, California, Oklahoma State, TEXAS A&M, South Carolina, TCU, etc (These teams are consistent 7-9 game winners and every so often will break through with a 10 or 11 win season).
    3) Poor - Washington State, Syracuse, Duke, (Programs that are consistent doormats in their conferences and struggle to make a bowl game consistently)

    When alignment came up, the SEC was looking for these characteristics in a team: 1) One that would deliver the Texas market to increase their current TV contract revenue. 2) A team that would be a quality opponent and bring a quality athletic's program, but not a powerhouse or elite program that would challenge the SEC elite at the bargaining table. (LSU, Alabama, Florida, etc). 3) A team with tradition and one that could identify with the southern culture.

    Hence: Texas A&M.
    The SEC would love to have Texas or Oklahoma, but both programs have a lot of baggage and have a lot of demands (LHN, Oklahoma wants its own television network). Of course the SEC will put out "feelers" for these programs, but in the end they are just too big and powerful to include as an ordinary member. So they move on a quality program like Texas A&M to hopefully deliver the Texas market and not be a pest at the bargaining table. A&M also helps improve the academics of the conference.

    Essentially it's a win-win for the Big 12 and the SEC. The SEC gets the non-elite team it needs to bring tradition and fall in line with the SEC establishment, and the Big 12 gets to go out and "upgrade" with TCU and West Virginia. I say "upgrade" because although the Aggies might bring a more historic tradition and bigger name than West Virginia or TCU, the fact is both TCU and West Virginia have had more recent success.

    So for all of the Aggies saying "Texas isn't wanted by the SEC" just tell yourself that in a mirror. In the end, you are ultimately just good enough but yet not elite enough of a program to get an invite. Essentially, you are the 3 star recruit filling a void after the 4 & 5 star guy higher up on the board indicated he wasn't interested.

    Texas had an offer from the SEC to join. Texas was concerned about the potential political backlash so they went back to the SEC and said your offer needs to include A&M. The SEC said no deal. Google the name of the legenday SEC commissioner (early 90's) if you want the full story.
