do you guys actually like Salt Lick?

I can understand suggesting it if you need a place for a large group and the environment is nice but the food really is mediocre and that is on a good day.

The environment is pretty nice but I'll take a trip to Lockhart if I want the best.

    Llano has the best.

  • By the time you drive to Llano or Lockhart, you'd be at the front of the line at Franklin ready to partake in the finest brisket known to humankind..

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

  • i would not waste time going to the salt lick. Franklins and Jmuellers are in the city and much better. Salt lick cooks their meat in an electric oven and then puts it in the big firepit in the restaurant to make it look authentic... and if you've been to the first 2 places mentioned you know they don't even remotely compare.

recommended restaurants for an authentic austin experience:
Casino El Camino ( huge awesome cheeseburgers at a true dive bar on 6th street)
Uchi or Uchiko ( fine dining japanese )
La Condesa ( fine dining mexican downtown )
Torchys Tacos ( awesome tacos )
Chuys or Hula Hut (greasy huge plate tex-mex)

Juan in a Million on Cesar Chavez east of I35. It's not in the best part of town, but it's still plenty safe and the food is delicious. Get the Don Juan (HUGE breakfast taco), if you can eat 8 of them you'll be the new record holder. It was the place where the guy on Man vs. Food went for his Austin challenge.

+1. A short cab right from downtown and a great way to end an extremely late night or start the post day hangover.

For BBQ go to the original Salt Lick in Driftwood, Texas. Its cash only and its BYOB.

OVERRATED, But good for tourists. Having lived here my whole life I don't understand why Saltlick always comes up....the atmosphere maybe but there are at very least 4 to 5 better BBQ places in Austin.

I will admit - I would rather smoke my own dead animals then go anywhere else. That being the case, I haven't been to Franklins or Muellers. Don's has been around for years... it's on 290 just past the Y at Oak Hill.

I'm gonna track down this Muellers place, cuz I love some beef ribs every now and again. Thanks for the info!

I'll have to try Don's. I love great Q. If you're out that way and like Mexican food, try La Familia on William Cannon between Brodie and Mopac. Behind the former Hollywood Video building. Great Mexican food and cold beers!

  • Doesn't help for his trip, but since this becoming a bbq thread, getting very excited for this to come in less than minutes from my house:

Basically Schmitty's and Kreuz's of Lockhart getting together again on a joint venture in west Austin...

    Makes me very happy.

I've tried all of it and will eat any of it - Franklin's, Salt Lick, Cooper's, Mueller's, Lockhart co's, Green Mesquite, etc... even Rudy's. Sign me up, its all good. After years of living away from Texas, its great to have even the worst of these options so convenient...

Thanks for the info... I work near this area. Cafe Evangeline's is the best stuff I can find in the area, and that's cajun food.

I gotta tell ya though... I grew up in Southwest Texas (Uvalde), and it's been hard for me to appreciate any tex/mex food in Austin. San Marcos has Herbert's that is 50% there, but SA is the only option I've found for anything comparable.

  • Well we decided that a rental was the way to go. We did the sixth street East/West experience last night. It was a lot of fun. Liked the east better, more happening last night anyway. The piano bar was a hit with all of us.
My next question if someone would be helpful, when we try to park at one of the garages for the game on Saturday, what time do they fill up, and is there another option?

I suspect that if you aren't in a garage by 1 you may be hunting for another parking spot. As long as you don't wait until two hours before kickoff, you're going to find a parking spot...you just may have to hunt a little more.

I don't know if that little lot on San Jacinto just south of 15th is still there or not, but I have parked there before. It's on the right hand side as you go south on San Jacinto.

Well, how far are you from the stadium? I used to ride my bike or take a cab as close as I could get to the stadium when I lived on South Congress. Now that I live out on the lake I generally park all the way over on 8th and Red River (near Stubbs)... there used to be no charge for street parking spots, but when I went to the Wyoming game, they have now started to charge $$$ for metered parking.

So... I'd take a cab, but you best call them way in advance.

think they are staying at the omni - should be plenty of cabs right there. cab is definitely the way to go. driving that short a distance is a beating that isn't worth it. cab should be about $3 or $4.
