Those 2 points and 2 assists vs Cincy will be irreplaceable.

With his performance against Cincy he ought to have his scholarship revoked.

Hell, he ought to have to pay for his year here and then be shown the door.

Man I HATE what college Bball has become.

One and dones are obviously a problem for Texas but the 5 star players who don't play up to their ability also hurts Texas. Thompson was the only one that played like a 5 star player. If Bradley, Joseph and Kabongo had played like 5 star talents then Texas might have advanced further in NCAA tournaments.

    Durant?

  • The thing I find interesting is guys that actually should be leaving based on talent level are Harrison Barnes and Sullinger but they came back. Now we have this guy who played great if he was on a high school team leaving early.

I hope any fallout from both leaving won't hit Ridley. He would be looking at a roster of all sophs and freshmen

A local Sports Writer today questioned why he still has not signed.

So if we have a Tristan Thompson, Corey Joseph, Avery Bradley or Myck Kabongo (based on their HS talent) we should pass?

    get off my farm

  • I think the Canadian Pipeline isn't the problem here as some have alluded in this thread. The bigger issue is the recruiting from 'basketball factories' (like Findley Prep or Oak Hill Academy) of blue chippers who have ZERO interest in college and only stay for a year until they are eligible for the NBA draft. I think Rick Barnes and company have proven that they can recruit the superstars, but the reality is that they aren't going to stick around for more than 1 or 2 seasons. You still need to recruit those folks to be competitive on a National stage, but maybe limit it to 1 or 2 superstars while filling the rest of the roster with solid 3 to 4 year college players. That way if you lose 1 (or 2) superstars you can fill them 1 or 2 more the next year while still having a strong core team to build around those guys.

  • When your pitch is we will get you ready for the NBA you can't be surprised when the player leaves for the NBA.
When your pitch is come because of the program then the player will be motivated to stay in the program.
Texas hasn't learned to effectively market their program outside of their NBA pitch.
I don't know if they can really.
Because that is one of the only selling points it has.

Get players to the NBA - yes
    History - no
    Fan Support - no
    Arena - no
    Tournament Success - no
Facilities - You can say yes but with the type of kid Texas is going after all these schools now have top notch facilities.

So besides 6th street and the NBA, there isn't a lot about the "program" you can pitch.
I also think Todd Wright is a positive but he falls into the get you ready for the pro's pitch.
Now I know all the big dog schools pitch get you ready for the NBA as well but all of them have something else to fall back on whether it be tradition, fan support or tournament success.

The recent exception to that would be Baylor. And only Jesus, agents and AAU coaches around the country can speak to that.

i agree man. i believe the shitty fan support plays a role in these decisions. there just isn't a lot excitement around the program right now.

The fact of the matter is that the basketball program isn't fun to follow from a casual fan's perspective. The emphasis of the program appears to be providing a 1-year NBA factory for top-flight HS talent rather than winning championships on the hardwood.

Barnes' player development model of breaking young players down and rebuilding them is incongruous w/his one-and-done recruiting style. By the time he rebuilds his players and can start reaping the rewards of their play, the season's over, they jump and the cycle repeats itself.

Combine that w/Barnes' well-documented history of underachieving the NCAA tournament and there's just not a lot to get excited about if you're a casual basketball fan. That characterizes me and I've nearly entirely tuned out at this point. As I tell all my A&M friends, the fan support will follow when the program starts winning. It doesn't work the other way around.
