**Paden Kelley decides to stop playing football**

    Balogna.

Show me someone, anyone, else who recruits for a prestigious football program who has literally had ZERO of his recruits get drafted and coached for as long as he did. Then realize his recruits make the largest proportion of the players on the field.

His failure as a recruiter is historically bad. His coaching could not be much better. Remember Nebraska '09? Our OL was consistently our biggest weakness once the guys he inherited left.

Trying to defend Macwhorter is laughable. I can't believe you are even attempting it on a Longhorn board. You might as well start a thread claiming that A&M will dominate the SEC or that Bob Stoops should be the next coach here.

It's amazing that people with zero information on a subject can be so viceral.

How do you know one single thing about how the man can coach?

Where were all you talent experts when the kids signed? Were you howling then, or only now?

Anybody follow Texas football long enough to remember the wild happiness when he was hired and his first couple of years?

You guys need some sort of anger management.

I wonder if he had been passed by Greenlae on the depth chart.

gordosan, no that is not the case. In fact, Greenlea is probably the next casualty on the attrition train.

I don't give a damn about rankings. With the way Texas fills up early its an easy crutch for sites to give a lot of our players high rankings without evaluating as much.

Yep, and that was especially true back in the 2006-2009 time frame before the recruiting services had caught up to the early junior day offers and commits....something that has only really happened in the last year or two.

You missed the point completely that I was trying to make...................in fact most people think if a player commits early it actually hurts their rankings. My point with the rankings is that everybody missed........coaches and scouts but as Bag posted the coaches are the most at fault because they failed to develop the players once they arrived on campus. Before we are too hard on the football staff (and they deserve criticism starting with Mack Brown) the "experts didn't do their job either..... check out the Texas class national rankings......the 2nd number is the average star for each class. For me sometimes that is a better indicator how the class should be ranked because some many of the recruiting services put an heavy emphasis on the size of the class.

    Scout.com 2006 #3 3.72 2007 #3 3.84 2008 #16 3.70 2009 #7 3.75 2010 #3 3.96

    Rivals.co 2006 #5 3.6 2007 #5 3.79 2008 #14 3.55 2009 #5 3.85 2010 #3 3.92

    All of which means NOTHING.

Class rankings and the Star system are jokes.

The only way to judge the talent you signed is 4 years after the signing date.

Those that can coach - those that can't work for Rivals or Scout.

  • The problem isn't necessarily that he likes to smoke pot and drink... most college kids and athletes do that stuff... it's that he prioritizes those things over playing football. Not anywhere close to being a talent maximizer, and when you're short on natural talent and you don't maximize what you have it's a bad combo.

  • Some folks lump all Westlake and Lake Travis kids into the same bucket the same ignorant way they tended to lump all inner city kids years and years ago.

The issue I have is the "good player from a good program" approach, and that can be both a predominantly white school (like Lake Travis/Katy/Southlake Carroll) and black school (like Dallas Skyline/DeSoto/Cedar Hill).

Sometimes it works. However, too often it's a crutch for not evaluating every school and every player thoroughly, at least it was for several years at Texas.

I think the recruiting from '07-'09 continues to hurt the program and may effect Mack's legacy to some degree if he doesn't right the ship completely.

  • Greenlea had a ~2.1GPA in high school. Good test score, but bad grades IIRC.

Skyline has little in common with Desoto or Cedar Hill.

    Skyline is innner city/DISD

DeSoto/Cedar Hill are suburban schools with far better coaching and development.

Katy/Southlake Carroll, like DeSoto/Cedar Hill has produced top flight talent.

Skyline/Travis, all hat (hype) no cattle (playas)

White black ain't got squat to do with it.

It's Mc Whorter's fault the kid has personal problems?

Really now. Little pissy tonight Bobby?

Actually it is a group fault but particularly the coach that chose him which is his position coach. So yeah it's called bad eval. It is legendary how bad our OL was from '07 though '10. Three years of bad OL recruits '07 to '09, four years, '07 to '10, of bad OL coaching and bad OL play. Amazing our QB wasn't decapitated during the stretch. Came to to having his head handed to him a few games because the OL couldn't hold water. Glad the man is gone and we are back on track with how we pick and develop OL prospects.

Damn! Offensive linemen are usually the smartest people on the team, I still rememberer that the average GPA on my high school OL was about 3.7. The RG has a master's in wine brewing, the LT as a degree in business finance, the C is working on his PhD in biological chemistry, the RT is in law school and the LG is an English teacher.

    Wasn't Swope a Westlake kid?

I'd say he was pretty solid. Coach Dabbs REALLY pushed hard for Mack to recruit him.

He alone would have won us at least 1 more game last year, probably 2.
