An egregious overstepping of its bounds by the NCAA. Shameful.

So the NCAA suspends a program for 2 years for paying their players money while on probation, but then they're supposed to just watch as a university covers up the the RAPING of little children? If you feel that way, then I'm very sad for you.

  • I know it's not likely, and probably not even in his own plans, but I kinda wish Coach Brown would stay for the remainder of his contract or longer. I just don't see any way that one of the classiest men in sports would ever allow anything like that to happen or continue. Let's hope at least if he doesn't stick around for long (maybe retires after our 2013 NC), that our next coach is definitely cut from the same cloth.

  • Oddly enough, Mike McQueary was the quarterback for Joe Paterno's last official win.

You can feel how you'd like about me, but just remember that I possess the ability to separate the criminal/civil/legal side of this from the NCAA's side of this. And I'll remember the opposite about you.

I'm not saying the NCAA shouldn't be concerned, but unless NCAA bylaws were broken then they should let most of this play out in the courts. This is grandstanding, knee-jerk and doesn't solve much of anything. I understand why the emotional want - need? - it to happen, but that doesn't mean it was the right thing to do. Where does the NCAA stop now?

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

I don't think anyone is condoning what happened there, just questioning whether or not it's within the NCAA's jurisdiction to penalize the school under these circumstances.

Two different things. Rules of competition versus criminal behavior that people should go to jail for. You feel vindicated because something big and public was done. Fine. I can understand people that live in the moment are happy. Those people that are still alive and knew it was happening should go to jail. That would be true justice. Now we have given a rogue organization more power. Stupidity to the max.

Keep in mind, the Big 10 will be doing their own punishment.

Will it have the guts ?
    I hope so.

  • Sounds like for every one you go over by taking a PSU player you have to take one less the following year. That being said I think we should tay where we are.

Heard teams can allow Penn State transfer(s) & go over 85 in '12, but would have to reduce by same number of scholarships next year/beyond.

I hear what ur saying...but at the same time wasn't the NCAA given the power to do this? Penn State has also agreed to these penalties so maybe Penn State felt they deserved it too...

If you're afraid someone might abuse their power you don't give it to them....

  • Any use of the word 'jurisdiction' is wrong.

The NCAA is not a governing body. It is a voluntarily club. The thing to remember is that all NCAA rules, regulations, punishments, etc, are agreed to voluntarily by the member institutions who value their membership in the club.

Penn State or any other school could shoose to ignore these punishments and any other rules it wants to. It would just have to find a new club to join.

  • This isn't a death penalty, but it is Lingering Death. I haven't thought it through completely, but in that regard, it's worse than SMU.

Just enough scholarships to field a team, but not enough to attract the kind of players they've been recruiting. No bowls/postseason for the next class, so that finishes it off.

And it's fine to say, we'll take your football revenue for a year. I saw that as a direct impact on non-rev sports, but I see that Emmert has told them they can't touch them. We'll see, is all I can say.

Then there's the question of how many tickets they can sell for MAC-level ball. There will be a ripple effect, as regards the money, until they get back to full scholarships. It's much more than a $60 mil impact.
