Overstreet

  • I read on TOS that Overstreet is a likely redshirt. I would think he plays the role that Ash played last year the first half of the season as a change of pace and Wild Horn qb. Mods, what is your opinion? Any insight?

  • I said this earlier today but I know they want to redshirt him. I just don't know if anyone can say that for sure until they see what he can do with live reps running the zone read in red zone situations.

  • Keep in mind that Harsin likes a quarterback that can move and thus open up the playbook. If a package of plays for Overstreet (even if it's around 5 plays a game) would be something the staff thinks can move the ball and put points on the board then he'll play, IMO.

  • It may be a good sign if Overstreet redshirts. It could indicate that (1) we don't have to have a freshman QB to run the Wild sets, and (2) the offensive staff likes what they're seeing from him as an every-snap QB down the line, and wants a redshirt year for him to develop.

  • Whether Overstreet remains a QB at TEXAS or moves to another position, I really hope for the kids' sake he gets to shirt this year.

    Think Gray and Daje are the likely "wild Foz" options this year though obviously JO provides a passing option. I just hate that we waste a year from 2 or 3 kids each season running just a few plays. Mykkele Thompson last year was a perfect example. Didn't get enough S reps to really do himself much good.

    Of course I'd have had MT playing WR but there is a reason I don't have a 6-7 figure coaching contract.

    In the past Harsin has used a package with an option QB coming in. They do this at Boise and Harsin did it with Ash last year. It's a different set of plays than the wildcat.

    from what I have read, I agree; but more will be known after 'real' practice starts.

    Maybe a combination of Ash/Gray can get it done just as well (with Shipley taking a snap or two since he has shown the ability to throw fairly well -- at least the deeper ball)

    2. Overstreet is a much more athletic player.

    I'm all for RS'ing Overstreet, and letting Brown or Gray run the WC.

  • Why not Shipley as the wildcat QB. He's smart, fast, knows the play book and throws touchdown passes. What's not to like? Give Overstreet the shirt and let him press Brewer and vice versa.

    Think of the plays the Wildcat Qb runs... don't think Ship is a 'between the tackles' kind of guy! Matter of fact, I know he's not and I don't want Shipley running between the tackles...

    Yep. But that doesn't mean they will.

    From what I am told, Overstreet still *could* be an answer to a specific piece of the puzzle. Like others have said, Gray is also in that mix.

    I think it depends on ball security of Overstreet and health of Gray.

    Exactly. A lot of the wildcat QB runs are smashes between the tackles, there are others on the roster who are better runners, and both Shipley brothers have been prone to injuries.

    I want the kid to get his red-shirt to give him the opportunity to maximize his skill at QB, but I do see Bobby's point. In honesty, its less Gray's health than it is Ash's. Reducing the wear and tear on Ash, even if its only five option plays a game will give him a better chance to be playing in Nov. For Gray, I'm not worried about his work load. Brown/Bergeron are going to be the first and second backs for the majority of snaps and will be the short yardage, jumbo package. Gray will be the third down back if he learns blitz pick ups. That leaves the Wildcat to give him most of his carriers. I just don't see him getting more than 15-20 touches a game, at least during the first half of the year.
