Oregon's (rumored) penalties....

  • Loss of conf TV revenue for a year for the school on probation would have college/univ presidents take notice...I'm sure the other 11 schools in the Pac-12 would love to take Oregon's share of the Pac-12 ABC deal...or the Fox Sports West coast deal...or the bowl TV money

It's interesting so many people were agreeing and enjoying the harsh penalties listed in the OP.

Is that because you want to see harsher punishments across the board to violators or you think that what Oregon did was far worse than Ohio State, etc, and the Ducks deserve stricter punishments?

    Alan
i think it is for some of us, a desire to see real penalties that create a difference. I have in a few posts, alluded to Roger Goodell's handling of the Saint's bounty issue. I am a HUGE Saints fan. they are MY pro team, but i back Goodell to the hilt on his decision. and you bet it will "make a difference" in this type issue. Lots of people were saying "oh every team has this same thing". well i betcha they don't now.

Trying to be nice and not really hurt a school is not going to do anything. Real penalties that coaches cannot just walk away from by transferring schools would be a good start.
Real penalties that cost real money to a school that needs money for a big sports program is a good start.
Real scholarship hits can make a difference.

I am with another poster, trading game jerseys for a tattoo may be a light thing. But getting fake jobs (hey i hate OU , ok), or buying players, is big. It wont take too many real time penalties that cause real time hurt to get university presidents to stop this stuff. And make the penalty stay with the coach would do a world of good.

Did you happen to catch the Shapiro and Miami case?

...but again, that was a booster, right?

shannon didn't know about it or at least wasn't responsible for any of that was my (limited) understanding.

I find that hard to believe. He was on the sidelines constantly and was there waiting for them when they got out of the smoke.

    Yes.

Paying for recruits is far, far more harmful to the sport than allowing current players to make money selling their things on the side, and is an actual tangible advantage given to the cheating team.

Oregon could benefit on the field by buying a recruit. OSU doesn't see any benefit on the field when Terrelle Pryor trades a jersey for a tattoo.

BTW, the part about banning OOS recruiting makes the whole OP suspect. Never heard of such a thing from the NCAA, sounds made up.

Oregon's use of three scouting services that "didn't conform" with NCAA rules, and exceeded the number of coaches allowed to recruit, is way different then "paying for recruits."

Yes, but a coach with no ethics who is willing to lie to investigators and allow players whom he knew to have broken the rules to play in any games, let alone a multi-million dollar profit bowl game, is just as dangerous, if not more so. I dont think buying a recruit is too much of a stretch for Tressel. Either issue deserves harsh penalties. I think OSU got off easy, Oregon should get at least as harsh of penalties

Ya. Not sure why people are so quick to overlook tressel and aOSU. I would say UNC and aOSU are both arguably worse than Oregon and obviously Miami is worse than all 3

I totally agree. Tressel had multiple opportunities to reveal what he knew and chose repeatedly to withhold info until well after he knew he was caught. He was complicit with everything that happened. tOSU got off easy, I thought double the penalties they received was a more appropriate punishment. And you're right, Miami, if everything Shapiro says is true, or even half of it for that matter, should be looking the death penalty square in the eyes... The U is dead as we know it i think

Ya, if Miami doesn't get something horrible then there is no justice whatsoever. They set the bar so high with USC that they have to destroy Miami. The USC sanctions are a joke especially when you consider how they let aOSU and UNC slip off with so little. aOSU and UNCs sanctions make me think that Oregon will get off pretty easily

  • Justice delayed is justice denied. It takes the NCAA forever to figure out what happened and do anything about it. It's time to lay the wood to somebody. Oregon, Miami, Auburn. There are plenty of candidates.

USC at least got punished for Bush, although they should have been stripped of their titles, and Bush of the Heisman by the NYC Athletic Club. Auburn? not even a peep from the NCAA or Auburn other than "dad did it. he didn't know." if i were some schools i'd be pretty angry over this.

I have always thought that the titles should have been stripped from USC. From the moment Bush stepped on campus, they should vacate everything. Wasnt Bush and his family were receiving benefits the entire time he was their, not just his Heisman winning season?

Well, thats true if you believe Chip Kelly's official story.

If on the other hand, you've been following the Willie Lyles saga since well before Yahoo made it public knowledge, and you knew he was selling Lache Seastrunk since before you knew Oregon was the buyer, then the official story that Chip Kelly paid $25k for verbal recruiting reports and over the phone consultation becomes a little hard to swallow.

I will say this...if Oregon is hit that hard, pac12 titles will be handed to usc on a silver platter for the near future and that will be bad for big 12 programs aiming for NC appearances, especially with sec champ all but guaranteed a spot at the NC. If that is the case we better hope the commissioners come up with some final four plan asap."

Stanford will be a threat as well IMO. Momentum from the Luck/Harbaugh years will carry over.

I wonder how this compares to the "penalties" that usc got with all the corruption in their program?
