**Opening practice report: Part III**

  • I can set my calendar to rave reviews of Okafor's spring practice performance.

If joe is the better back, does he get the call over brown?

After last year, with both Brown and Bergeron got hurt late in the game, I'd rather see the carries get spread around this year. Johnathan's father James is right. It's better to have several backs sharing the load.

    The "POD"...I am ready.

It sounds and awfully like the "Diamond" formation that Holgerson was using at Oklahoma State.

  • I like Bergeron, But he is not better than Malcolm. There were games last year were his skill was needed and that is what makes them a very nice tandem and this year with Grey the trifecta will be hard to stop. Mark my words all three running backs run for 0ver 600 yards, Brown over 1000, Joe over 800 and Grey over 600 (if each back can stay healthy for at least 10 games.

  • we ran the "pod" a bit last season but basically its the diamond formation from the pistol. There's a ton of misdirection from the formation that's available to the offense and you could also do some of the option stuff we were toying with early in the season from it. With Brown and Berg both being big enough to run block and talented runners, I'm glad we are jumping on this concept more. Anyone interested in a little more technical look should check out this article from XandOlabs.com: http://xandolabs.com/2012/02/diamond-formation-misdirection-and-option-concepts/

Except OSU couldn't line up 2 five-star backs and Bergeron in that formation. Brown, Gray and Berg in the backfield at the same time...must be driving DC's crazy.

Scott, correct me if I'm wrong, but I only remember using the formation against Iowa State.

  • We ran it for a series in one of the early games but I can't recall which one and then maybe 2-3 other plays total the rest of the season... definitely only a handful of calls all season. I'll try to grab some film examples later today and post a link.

Which in turn sounds an awful lot like this formation I saw once upon a time called the "Wishbone"

The thought of Brown and Bergeron lead blocking for Gray makes me GRUNTLED.

  • I hope Musberger retires before "Duke" Thomas sees serious playing time.

Am I insane or is the Diamond not formed when the QB is even the backs off to his side and a RB is lined up behind him as well? I realize the formation could also exclude the back behind the QB and just have the QB a yard or two behind the backs to his side. Either way, those seem a lot different than the POD. The intent of having the QB moved up in the formation is to cloud the actual movement of the ball in the post snap without a FB in the formation and remove the ability for the defense to key on a single offensive player in the running game. Seems like the Diamond traditionally involves a FB and is more focused on forcing the defense into its look inside the box before the snap and meeting the defense with more offensive personnel at the point of attack than in other formations. Seems like the two formations have some similarities but the core intent in each is a bit different.

From the article "where the quarterback is in the pistol, with a running back behind him and another flanked on both sides of the QB."

Is your comment that "flanked" somehow is different than "at his side?"

Plus there is a new RB coming in this fall that should be "OK"..... :)

  • Bobby - with our stable of backs, I have actually had dreams that the Horns rollout the vaunted Wishbone (Ash at QB) on downs/distance where the "wild horn" or wildcat would be used. For this ol' timer, to see the Burnt Orange line up in that formation would bring tears of joy to my eyes. Is the "pod" technically the 'Bone with QB in shotgun formation?
