Oliver Luck thinks the Big 12 should expand

  • There has been plenty of movement within the Big 12 over the last two years, as the conference saw both Texas A&M and Missouri leave for the SEC, and brought in West Virginia and TCU to replace both of them.

Though if you ask West Virginia athletic director, Oliver Luck, the conference shouldn't stop at the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers.

"My recommendation would be to look long and hard at moving up, whether it's to 11 or 12, particularly when you look at how big the SEC is, how big the ACC is going to be, the number that the Big Ten and the Pac-12 are at," Luck told ESPN.com's David Ubben. "I think it would be wise to take a long hard look at that because there is some strength in numbers."

The Big 12 has taken further expansion under consideration in recent months, even putting together an expansion committee, but there hasn't been any movement recently. Still, schools like BYU, Cincinnati and Louisville have all been mentioned as possible expansion candidates in the past.

Luck also said that his time in the Big East gave him a good reason to think that expansion is what's best for the Big 12.

"My message to my fellow ADs -- and I'm the new kid on the block, so I haven't really said too much -- but I said to the group that I think the Big East was complacent by remaining at eight and that doesn't really give you much room for error if somebody does want to pick up and leave, as happened with Pitt and Syracuse ."

And if Luck gets his way, the Big East may lose Louisville and Cincinnati too.
