Oklahoma State vs. Alabama (lets discuss)

  • Texas Flood said...

Michigan only lost by three points against the number one team, the buckeyes. They deserve the shot because there are no other teams better than those two. No way.

    Oh wait, wrong year.

    Winner.

I do think this is a very interesting discussion because Oklahoma State won in a big way last night.

    Oklahoma State

    Opponents record: 81-63

    Conference (Big 12) record: 71-48

Teams with better than .500 record on schedule:[i] 7

    [i]Margin of victory: 23.5

    Alabama

    Opponents record: 84-61

    Conference (SEC) record: 55-42

Teams with better than .500 record on the schedule: 5

    Margin of victory: 27.2

I have always thought that it matters when you win and lose in CFB regardless of the opponent. Comparing loses does not do any good if both teams didn't lose to the same team. I understand the argument of Bama losing to LSU but they lost at home which should have been an advantage for them.

With OSU's blowout victory over a top 10 team the last week of the regular season that happens to be a rivalry is enough in my book to say they get to play in NC. Also from your records above it looks like OSU had a stronger SOS and they won their conference championship.

  • Gerry I believe I have never yet disagreed with what you post. This time I do. Humans are just that. The death in the OSU family had a lot to do with their loss in my opinion. These are young men who have feelings and emotions. I am trying to be Dr. Phil here but I am taking something into account. The other factor to me is if you do not win your conference in the mess that is the BCS that should be held against you. Lets see Alabama had LSU at home at night and got beat. Why do they deserve a rematch if there is any team that can make a close to equal claim. If Alabama gets it rather than OSU I believe it will be on the past rep of the school. Alabama the home of the Bear etc rather than an objective look at which just might be a better team. Do I think that OSU would beat Bama head to head? I do not know. All I do know is Bama had LSU at home and lost. I say give OSU a chance.

I did not type this message but I approve

Not only did Alabama and Stanford not win their conferences, they didn't win their divisions. This is a perversion of the system. LSU had to (at least theoretically) risk their spot in the NC game while Bama sat home. Only a six-team or eight-team playoff solves any of this.

This discussion seems to call for a play off which is the basic answer to this.

  • Nice of Gerry to use 10-2 Georgia Southern in his SOS argument. You are being intellectually dishonest using 1 game out 12 to make your point.

Subtract the FCS school and Alabama's SOS is 74-59 or.556 vs. 81-63 or .563

I just put up every team they played, my bad. My mistake on that.

I think Nick Saban made his point clear.

"Anyone who doesn't win their conference, has no business playing in the national championship." - Nick Saban in 2003

that's not a direct quote by the way, he never said that. Spent two hours trying to find it and never came across an article or an interview in which he said that.

  • The BCS Guru has flipped:

In a stunning turn of events, Oklahoma State will face LSU in the BCS Championship Game on Jan. 9, not Alabama, as had been widely believed until the wee hours Saturday night.

The final BCS Standings will be close between OSU and Alabama, with the computers locking in the Cowboys at No. 2 and Alabama at No. 3. And then it would be up to the voters to render their final verdict.

More of them will still have Alabama at No. 2, in both the coaches and Harris polls, but OSU's edge in the computers will be enough to overcome the Crimson Tide's advantage in the two human polls.

A few things that happened tonight turned the tide:

    * Oklahoma State's impressive victory over Oklahoma was a resounding statement. The Cowboys proved that not only they could score, but they could play sound defense and cause game-changing turnovers.

    * Virginia Tech's blowout loss against Clemson removed a direct competitor for the precious No. 2 votes, not to mention the all-important No. 3 votes. Remember, OSU was No. 5 in both polls coming into Saturday night's game.

To be clear, I can see that scenario happening for sure.

Not on board with it, at all in terms of getting the two best teams in college football on the field for the NC game, but I don't have a vote.

Just me, but I think college football and the current system looks like a bigger joke with Oklahoma State playing in the NC game, and it's absolutely nothing against Oklahoma State University or their coaches or players as they have had a tremendous season.

Keep in mind that Iowa State lost at home to 7-5 Texas by 23 (37-14), 6-6 Texas A&M by 16 (33-17), at Baylor by 23 (49-26) and at Missouri by 35 (52-17). They also lost to Oklahoma 26-6 and Kansas State 30-23 after beating Oklahoma State, so they didn't even validate the upset win.

Iowa State's Big 12 wins were 5-7 Texas Tech, 2-10 Kansas and Oklahoma State.

Iowa State beat one other team with a winning record this year, 7-5 Iowa.

And for NLeinenger, 10-2 Northern Iowa, which I almost included, but double checked. lol

For me, just not the type of team that should be playing for the NC.

Then again, the current system is a disaster (other than monetarily), so it fits the trending pattern.

  • More intellectual dishonesty. Keep harping one game when you can't win the entire resume argument.

I could say the same thing about the Georgia Southern game. Alabama had to put up 2 TDs late to make that win look better than it was.

  • BTW ESPN is reporting that Brad Edwards is saying it will be the closest points in history

    Gerry,

In this discussion, the real question that I have for you in this discussion is, basically very simple, are you a proponent of a playoff system in college football? If you are not, then I can understand your analysis of past losses and past victories; however, if you believe, like most fans do, that we need a better system for awarding a champion, then it is difficult for me to understand any argument for Alabama.

In an earlier post, I used an example of the NFL and having the two most highly regarded teams play in the same conference. If they meet in a divisional playoff game, the loser has no right to play for a championship a few weeks later and to suggest it would be laughable.

With the way the games were played out yesterday, it has to be OSU vs. LSU, and for anyone to suggest otherwise, and also want a playoff, would be hypocritical.

In addition to this discussion, the BCS needs OSU. If Alabama beats LSU in the championship game, and OSU wins their bowl game in the same way they won last night, then the entire system will look even more laughable than ever.
