Offensive Observations: Saturday -- Ash, new 2-back look, Davis

  • browncounty said...

You mean the same transgression that Jordan Hicks was tangled up in?

Do you fellows realize that Ash won't make it a whole season this year? Once his confused, slow-developing, overthinking side shows up, we're gonna be in trouble. Ash is not going to turn the corner. Ever. But he looks good right? And can throw a mile yes?

You haven't seen Case bail out his last Texas victory. Whether you deserve it or not.

The backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team. You may be right about Ash making it a whole year. Time will tell. You are correct Case has bailed him out a couple of times including the all important aggy game. But spot duty and full time starter aren't the same thing and I am not convinced McCoy would be a better full time option then Ash. My encouragement comes from watching Ash play the second half of the Oregon State game once they went up tempo. He was very good and the TD pass he made to Gray on the scramble is not a pass Case makes because of the arm strength required.

  • Brewer is better than Ash. I hope the coaches dont make that switch.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

    Ingrates. All of you.

Case says "you're welcome" for the last win against Aggy.

    Either troll or stupid.

Thank you for the constructive post. In the case of Case (sorry), it appears he is everything BUT the most popular guy on the team, even though he is backup QB. I was just rushing to defend him in this tough crowd.

His arm is not strong, and yes he was involved in some late night promiscuity. But so was Hicks, so everybody needs to get consistent on their stance in that regard.

I hope Ash truly breaks out and proves me wrong, but I don't know if he will ever perform on a consistent basis. His output is too sporadic, seeming to resurge every time Case has a good outing. I think he lets his guard down and plays best when he feels the starting job may be threatened. But once that is squared away, he starts to get over-cautious, and slow in his decisions. I'm still not convinced that the speed of the game at this level is not too much for him. It seems when Case takes the field that he can find the open receiver, and the strength to deliver is the only question. Ash locks in on one guy and forces the play. Case reads the field MUCH better than Ash.

Brewer? I don't know about him either. We may have to get by with a "serviceable" QB for awhile. No big deal, it worked for Bama before.

I'm guessing the latter in your case. Well thought out post. Would read again.

Yes, that same transgression. And you don't hear me clamoring for Hick's return either. I'm a guy that believes there should be consequences for our decisions. That said, there is a WORLD of difference between a guy who was not going to play making a stupid decision vs. a guy who LIKELY would have played making a stupid decision and risking not just a loss for his team but an entire season for one of his teammates. THAT is not the mark of a good leader or teammate.

And while you might criticize Ash's confused, slow-developing, overthinking side, I would take that any day of the week (and three times on Sunday) over a guy who lets his ego write checks that his body can't cash.

  • I like the sound of the Brown and Gray formation. Brown routinely took handoffs from 4 yards deep in HS, and was quite successful doing so.

Was Searels' group still working the majority of the time power blocking or was there added attention and time given to working on zone blocking?

I like this too. I really wish we could pull this off, as this sounds like the best way to leverage our strengths. Our RBs are hosses, our QB situation is experienced but not stellar, and our OL has lots of questions.

An up-tempo, running attack could be the answer to all this. Give our OL some help by not giving the defense time to think (or take a breath). Keep pressure off of Ash, and let's see if our horses can bust out 5 yards on every play, just bam, bam, bam.... All the while the defense is off-guard as to who will get the carry.

    Geez, sounds like the 60s...
