Obama: Change coming to reduce violence in football

  • Not trying to make this a political post, but I agree with what's been said. The President of the United States has no business making new rules for football or any sport. There are MUCH more important things to worry about.

  • If a trend develops where former pro football players put shotguns to their chests and pull the trigger (it's happened at least twice now) so that their brains can be examined post mortem for damage caused by the game, there is bound to be a ruckus.

I love the game. It's great. And it's dangerous. And that's a big part of the appeal, honestly.

Anyone who follows the game closely should be aware of this undercurrent that clearly exists. I have little sympathy for professional players, who are men and make their own decisions, The problem comes in when those decisions are looked up to and emulated by kids. Myself included, when I was in high school.

I was never even a good high school football player, but I loved it. And when I tore my knee up and doctors told me that a small percentage of athletes can play with a torn ACL, that was good enough for me at the time. I rehabbed and gave it a shot, and then I tore that knee up worse. And here I am, not crippled but certainly affected for the rest of my life.

Sure, the injury could have happened in soccer or any other sport. But the brain injuries that these guys are complaining about and killing themselves over could not have.

I love the game and do not want to see it change. But change will come whether we like it or not if this sort of thing keeps happening. What will the change look like? Who knows, but it's hard to imagine that it will look like the sport as we know it today.

In many ways, this mirrors the steroid conversation that has been going on for a long time now. I don't really give a crap if pro football players use them. They are men and make their own decisions. But it trickles down to kids who typically don't make good decisions since they are living in the moment and think they are indestructible. And that's bad.

I think this game will change based on recent trends. Protective equipment cannot change the fact that the brain still gets rattled around inside wonderful helmets.

And before the downvotes commence, realize that I am not advocating change at all. Merely joining those harkening its arrival. This game as we know it has a limited lifespan.

I'm not sure why you would think downvotes might commence based on what you said, but then again I'm not sure why 12 of the 24 votes for my original post would be downvotes either. It's only one vote, but you just got an up vote that would offset a downvote if you got one, but like I said I'm not sure why you would.

In regard to player's brains still getting rattled, I think both the NFL and the NCAA have tried to address the issue by penalizing players who use the top of their helmet or hit helmet to helmet. Without a doubt, the concussions and head injuries are some of the most concerning injuries in football today. If you don't believe the equipment can improve and reduce head injuries then what additional things do you thing the leagues could do to further reduce them?

Blake, I also tried to keep my post as free of politics as possible, but that's hard to do when the person in the article discussing changes to the game is the President. He may have only been answering a question, but I agree with everything you said.

Why did you post this?! I just made a 30 day commitment to no negativity @ church today! :)

Haha. Sorry about that. Good luck with the commitment you made at church. The first day's usually the hardest and now you only have 29 more to go. :)

Probably the worst thread topic and responses of my 2 years on this site.

A cheap way for a couple of jackasses to get political where it doesn't belong and take shots at Obama. How is he supposed to respond, that he couldn't care less about violence in football?

Like it or not, football is going to look a lot different in 10-20 years. If the brain injuries don't stop people aren't going to allow their kids to play.

  • There is still a lot of work to do in early detection, pretty soon we will see more longer clearing times for players to return from a concussion, and if you get two in a season might you be shut down for the rest of the year. I'm not sure if its happening yet but there is no reason for all players not to go through a full brain cat scan prior to every single season. we have to get better at detecting diseases. Then we still have issues on the field like with what happened to Colt last season.

  • Football will eventually go the way of boxing and be replaced by another sport in popularity, maybe some sort of murderball or terrordrome

The thread became inescapably political because it originated from a political hack. Obama doesn't know any more about sports policy than he does about how to get the 16% unemployed back to work.

A political hack? WTH? How in the heck did you come to a ridiculous conclusion like that? I tried to keep my strong personal political views out of this for the simple reason, I wanted to share the article and get thoughts and views on it with the hope it wouldn't be viewed as a political post. I agree with the last statement you made and with almost all of the comments posted. I hope my effort to keep it unbiased didn't make it appear to be coming from the left, and I don't see how it reflects strong views coming from the right. If I were a political hack as you put it, I should be fired because it doesn't come close to revealing my strong political thoughts! BTW...exactly which political party did you believe the original post to be inescapably supporting?

Look above for the question and full answer he gave. The interview is found here.

    http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112190/obama-interview-2013-sit-down-president#

He was asked a question in an interview, and he answered it. He said nothing that could be reasonably construed to imply he was interested in using his office to force a change or campaign for a change. He merely referred to the likelihood of gradual change (which we have been seeing for the last several years) and referred to the governing bodies as being the ones needing to look into the situation.

That hardly seems the sort of statement to make one say that he is paying too much attention to matters that are outside of the scope of his duties.

I love the "he was asked a question, so he answered it" response.

No offense to you, but that's a rather simplistic viewpoint.

I want a President that says "Really? Really? We've got a civil war going on in Syria, hostage situations, Al Qaeda puffing out their chests in North Africa, North Korea talking mad shit, and you want me.. The President of the United State of America... to comment on football and the safety of the sport?" and then laughs in the reporters face and dismisses them appropriately.

These "questions" are asked of him because he wants them to be asked. He wants to shift focus from his unpopular gun control tripe to something else... football. It's a political trick, and I'm embarrassed that it occurs and people fall for it. Just sad.

    Obama needs to STFU.

VaHorn, I'm sorry you feel that way. I saw the article and was curious to see how others felt about it. I know a lot's been made of the rule changes that have already been put in place and I wanted to hear what others thought about the possibility of more coming. I had reservations about sharing the article and posting any type of comments because of the passionate feelings people have when it comes to the president and how divisive we've become, but I was really hoping for the best and that a discussion with thoughts about safer equipment and additional rules could take place. You stated it's one of the worst threads as did Aristotle in the next post, again I'm sorry you guys feel that way, but I'd really like to hear why you think this thread topic is so bad. I look forward to your positive response. :)

Its pretty obvious that he isn't paying much attention to any scope of his duties other than the next election; but that's a different topic. The most distracted president of our generation.

Wild Bill was correct. Its up to kids if they want to play football. It's not a choice if someone in Chicago wants to walk the streets and take the chance of being wasted. It is an option if they want to play football or any other sport.

So since somebody ASKED HIM a question and he ANSWERED the question he is not paying attention to the scope of his duties and is distracted? What is he supposed to say? "I don't have an opinion on anything else besides the economy, next question"? Give me a break, the man stated his opinion to a question that was asked....

How is a thread topic, on a sports message board, with an article about changes to our nations favorite sport from your nations leader so bad?
Is it because you don't like most of the responses? And is it really necessary to stoop to calling people jackasses if their views are different than yours?

As a parent who sat helpless, other than lots of praying, witnessing my oldest son lay motionless during a football game stopped for about 15 minutes while trainers and paramedics checked on him, I know the importance of safety and the fear that comes with injuries from the sport! Thank God he was not permanently injured, but I don't think any rules could've prevented or protected my son from injury. When a middle school player tackles a player who out weighs him by 50lbs injuries can occur regardless of the rules. My younger son's now playing in high school so trust me, I know the discussions parents have with their children about the fears and reservations we have about them playing, but at the end of the day we make decisions that we understand we are responsible for. I have every reason to hope the game is as safe as possible, but we understand there will be risk playing football, just as there are in anything we do regardless of the rules in place!
