  • Two things need to happen for us to be a great team this year.

    1. LB Depth. Razor thin here. Wort, Nelson, Ibiloye, Byrd are what we have with experience. After that, its a bunch of young guys with no experience. An injury or two here and things could get bad for us in a hurry. Other than that, the defense looks good to go.

    2. WR/TE. We have a good group, but they were inconsistent after Broyles went down. That has changed this spring, but thats practice. I have to see it in the game. Metoyer has change the picture in a big way with his play and there are several WRs coming in with a chance to do the same, mainly Gardner. TEs are catching the ball and blocking well, but again, thats practice, I wanna see it in the game.

We are very deep on the OL, but I dont like our LT right now. Latu is coming in this summer and hopefully he will make a difference. We will see. Practices have been very very physical. As usual, we go 1s vs 1s, so that makes for some good battles.

OU Spring Update: They still suck

Can we get a consensus that this will be the Summer, Fall and Winter update as well?

    dweavernc

  • Their offense will be good as usual, but their defense will not be at an elite level. Nobody in their front 4 scares me. I think their LB corp will be good, but a drop off from years past. Tony Jefferson is a stud, but everyone else is meh. I think Dallas is going to be a whole different story this year.

    Coach Finnstock

  • How does OU get to the QB? That's kinda important in the Big XII

Who in OU's receiver or RB group scares you as a big play guy or a guy that scares you with speed? Nobody. Their WRs can be good and chain movers, but there is no Broyles-like threat to score on every play.

As long as we run the ball effectively and move the chains, we won't see the turnovers and quick scores that we have in years past. This OU team sets up really well for us doing what we want to do on both sides of the ball. Now, we just need to execute.

    Racer X

  • In case you haven't heard they are bigger, stronger and faster this year.

Seriously, I just read the SoonerScoop mod say that in his opinion their OL is a 6.5 on a 1-10 scale.

Our DEs are pretty good this year. RJ Washington is as good a pass rusher as Alexander was, but not as good against the run. He got to the QB pretty consistently last year. David King is on the other side at 173lbs but is pretty fast and also rushes well. Behing them, Nelson and Ndule are doing well. Nelson is really really fast, but I wanna see how he handles the run game. Ndule is pretty good all around, just has to get more consistent. The others have some growing to do.

Too early to tell because Gardner hasnt arrived yet. Pure speed is Franks (10.2) but hes not very elusive and can be jammed easily. Reynolds, Stills, Jackson, Franks and Metoyer have all been pretty good catching so far. Gardner is going to push somebody out of a job though and we also have Shephard, Neal and Woods coming in. Look good on film, but I have to see it on the field. Neal gets my nod to see time. Very good route runner and very good hands. The only reason he wasnt the #1 player in Missouri was because DGB was in his class.

Our defense will better than last year. We played a lot of people and got them some experience. We werent bad last year, but did have our WTF moments. Moving Colvin to corner and Jefferson to safety is going to help a ton. IMO, our defense will be on par or better than what you guys have. I know what you hear and read about your boys, but we are far from bad.

IMO, if we can find an LT, we will be able to do whatever we want on offense, running or passing. Johnson is at LT right now, but I am not sold on him. He played RT last year and didnt do to bad, but we need more size than he has and Latu brings that. I wouldnt rate it at a 6.5. I go 8 instead, especially if we go from under center more.

  • RJ Washington has done nothing to indicate he is as good as Alexander. He had a couple of good games but you guys have to replace 173 tackles on the DL from last year. David King? Really? What did he do to make one think he is going to fill the shoes?

"our defense will be on par or better than what you guys have"

After reading that there is no reason for us to even talk to you anymore. You have no clue. But what the hell.

We had a better defense than OU last year with young pups that didn't know come here from sic em and the few veterans that played were in a brand new system. We are now going into the 2nd year in the system and the kids will actually know the defense. Even if our defenses progressed at the same rate, ours would still be better.

    So you still think OU had/has a better defense than Texas. I'll steal this from jhablinski on another board;

Team Off Rank Avg.yds/game Against UT Against OU
    OU -----(5)------------(512)-------(453)----------NA
    OSU ----(3)-----------(549)--------(420)---------(495)
    Baylor--(2)------------(587)-------(511)--------(616)
    A&M-----(7)-----------(490)-------(328)---------(527)
    Miz------(12)----------(475)-------(338)---------(532)
    Tech----(13)----------(470)--------(411)---------(572)

The top offenses in the league not 1 of them made it to their season avg against Texas. We held most of them to their season lows. On the other hand OU allowed all of those offenses to exceed their season avg.'s except for OSU which beat you guys pretty handily.

So go blow your crap elsewhere, it doesn't fly here.

Under center, you are referring to Habern, that guy that just got the brace removed from his neck that will be blocking for the guy that just had the cast removed from his ankle, right?

Well, we will see wont we. The addition of M. Stoops will help a lot. RJ does get to the QB and David King is a very good player. Not a stat sheet guy, but we had no problem putting him in games, along with RJ, when the chips were down.

We had a couple of rough games, but I trust we will get it all ironed out on the back end. We usually do a pretty job of improving our guys and I dont think that will change this year. Our defense will be up to the task.

As for yards, we run a lot more plays and score a ton too, so they also get plenty of snaps in return.

No need to get your underwear all twisted, its only April. There is plenty of time before we play.

  • Formation wise it still includes the named parties, right?

And formation wise behind habern you have Austin Woods who is also injured backed up by Ikard who is actually your starting guard. And Bell, your QB was practicing at TE because there weren't enough bodies to have a real TE there.

Yeah, your OL is an 8.0, on a scale of 1-15

I dont know. Perhaps he gets to see more practice that I do. He may be more correct and he may not be. We will see though. They got better last year than the year before and I expect to see them take yet another stop this year.
